This is just going to be a quick write up on some ideas I have on the subject of losing weight, which are mostly coming from bits and pieces of things that I have been reading and watching over the last few days. These ideas are of course new to me, and maybe some of you, but probably not to everybody.

I will start by saying that there are some crazy misconceptions about losing weight. For one, there is the age old idea that eating low fat foods means that your body will use your own fat cells for energy. This simply is not true, and as a result of people believing this, they think that it's OK to eat a bowl of sugary cereal with low-fat milk because of the low fat content, when in reality it's sugar, or simple carbohydrates, that are causing them to get fat in the first place. People pass up the bacon for Special K, and this is a huge mistake. (Wouldn't you rather eat the bacon anyway?)

You're much better off to eat the bacon instead of the cereal, because simple-carb cereals breakdown in your body in much the same way that a can of soda does (everybody knows that soda makes you fat). Eating a high amount of carbohydrates causes a spike in insulin, which then the insulin does a couple of functions to even out your blood sugar, and one of them happens to be pushing the excess carbohydrates into your body's fat cells. For more on this read: LOWER YOUR CARBOHYDRATES AND LOWER YOUR INSULIN LEVELS

For little bit of anecdotal evidence on this notion that more carbs equates to more fat, think about the differences between carnivorous and omnivorous/herbivorous animals. Can you think of one carnivorous animal that is fat? Now think about the hippopotamus, they are primarily vegetarian. Another one thing to ponder, what do we feed livestock to fatten them up? It certainly is not meat.

So with this basic premise that more carbs equals more fat, one of the easiest methods to lose weight would be to follow what's called "The GI Diet." GI stands for Glycemic Index. This is basically the foods that people with diabetes should eat, and in my thinking what you should eat if you're trying to lose weight. A good primer on this can be found here: The GI Diet - List of low GI foods

"The glycemic index range is as follows:
Low GI = 55 or less
Medium GI = 56 - 69
High GI = 70 or more"

A really good film to watch: [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Fat-Head-Tom-Naughton/dp/B001NRY6R2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1308007057&sr=8-1]Amazon.com: Fat Head: Tom Naughton: Movies & TV[/ame]
The movie basically picks apart "Super Size Me" and the guy proves that you can actually lose weight from eating only fast food, but if you limit your carbs to 100g per day and calories to 2000 per day.

Erm...

Let me go through your arguments 1 by 1.

Firstly. There seems to be a misconception that carbohydrates make you fatter than fat itself, and that you should aim to cut your carbohydrate intake, while raising your meat intake. The first point there is just straight up rubbish. As to the cutting down carbohydrates while eating more meat, that's gonna give you a whole world of health problems down the line. Carbs are required for dealing with protein. (btw, @the special k point, you're sort of right about that, special k's no better for you than cornflakes, and less tasty)

Now, at the sugar breaking down in the same way as cereal. No. Sucrose spikes your blood sugar level, leaving you to crash later, feeling generally down, depressed, and most importantly, hungry, particularly for sugary things. As such, you go eating more, which is one of the main reasons why sugar's fattening.

Now, onto carnivorous animals vs herbivorous. Firstly, it's totally stupid to compare humans to carnivores, I've been over this before on here, but to say it quickly, our digestive system is very different to carnivores. Ok, to answer your question, though, no I can't, apart from my cat & dog. However, storing fat in fat cells, like a hippo, is different from being clinically obese. It's an evolutionary trait, and a useful one. It means you can survive longer. Carnivores have evolved in a different way, because it's just a little hard chasing a gazelle with 100 kilos of fat on your back ;) Also, obviously we don't feed livestock meat to fatten them up (although we used to) - firstly, because then you end up with foot & mouth, and have to kill off all your livestock. Secondly, feeding them with meat is a lot more expensive, and lowers profits, due to the pyramid of biomass.

I'm not even gonna go into why following the diet regime of a diabetic wouldn't be helpful.

@the film, yeah, you could, but it would be extremely damaging mid to long term - there's so many micronutrients and vitamins that Mcdonalds don't include in their food.

Its all about moderation and eating foods that are as far from altered by a human as possible.

Interesting thoughts OP but why no mention of exercise? Do these carnivores not work like motherfuckers to slay their prey and is that not the reason they are slim? What exercise does a hippopotamus do?

Hell no! They eat meat and fuck bitches all day.

I did not say to cut out all carbohydrates. Rather the more sensible approach would be to cut out the processed foods, like white bread, and soda. During food processing the natural fiber get knocked out of the food, and it's the fiber that helps to minimize the carbohydrate/insulin response in your body.

Now, at the sugar breaking down in the same way as cereal. Coco Puffs are basically sugar.

Even if the carnivores have a different digestive system, I think it's safe to assume that most internal processes are pretty common, especially since we are are warm-blooded mammals. If you feed a cat carbohydrates, they will get fat.

Please tell! I am always open to hear opinions.

The point of the film was not to say that eating fast food all the time is a good idea. Let's be realistic here. ;)

Even your grandmother could tell you, eating potatoes all the time will make you fat. These days the supermarkets are flooded with foods that spike your blood sugar much stronger than potatoes, such as Special K, which is supposed to be a "healthy" cereal. This came about when the government release the food pyramid and put wheat and grains on the bottom, and fats on the tip.

From Wikipedia: Food guide pyramid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The fats group as a whole have been put at the tip of the pyramid, under the direction to eat as little as possible, which is largely problematic. Under the guide, one would assume to avoid fats and fatty foods, which can lead to health problems. For one, fat is essential in a person's general sustainability. Unsaturated fats from a natural source can actually aid in weight loss, reduce heart disease risk, lower blood sugar, and even lower cholesterol. These fats can be found in olive oil, nuts,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_guide_pyramid#cite_note-19http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_guide_pyramid#cite_note-20 pesto, seafood (including fish, shrimp, squid, and krill among many more)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_guide_pyramid#cite_note-22http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_guide_pyramid#cite_note-23 and avocados.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_guide_pyramid#cite_note-24 Also, they are very long sustaining, and help keep blood sugar at a steady level.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_guide_pyramid#cite_note-26 On top of that, these fats help brain function as well.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_guide_pyramid#cite_note-28

On my phone so I don't feel like typing much, but seriously losing fat is not rocket science. Stop being fuckin lazy, perform a mix of resistance and cardio training 5 days a week, eat 5-7 smaller portioned meals a day, and make sure most of those meals aren't shit.

EASY.

I understand it's not rocket science. I just like to understand some things better.

^^^ This X 100 ^^^

Want to lose weight? It's simple. Eat real foods: non-processed, health foods with plenty of fruits and vegetables.

Also, follow the Japanese diet. Get up from the table when you're 80% full. It takes about 15-20 minutes for your brain to register that you've eaten enough.

If you do this and add in a little exercise you'll lose weight. You can't overeat if you're eating healthy. It's practically impossible.

After lots of research myself I agree with most of what you said. You should also read Good Calories, Bad Calories if you haven't though it's a pretty heavy read. Also Fat Head is on netflix streaming and it's quite good.

Whatever you do remember keep exercising and working hard at it even if you don't understand it completely (because not even the best scientists understand the our bodies fat metabolism completely.) I've been guilty of the over analyzing and not working hard enough myself.

Fact is simply...you all can argue, and bitch, and moan all you want.

There are hundreds of ways you can lose weight, and hundreds of ways you can gain weight. It all depends on what you like and what fits your lifestyle......and what you can reasonably stick with for an extended period of time.

Everyone always swears by this, swears by that..blah blah blah. Ever wonder why every guy on stage at a bodybuilding/mr. olympic competition is shredded, jacked, cut, etc etc......yet every one of them swears by a different diet, fad, system, supplement, blah blah blah blah.

There is no one answer, so everyone saying dont do this, instead do that.......... just give it a rest already.
