No more Amazon for Ca affiliates..

Apparently CA is where the affiliate/nexus tax battle is really going to be fought. Good to see Amazon drawing a line in the sand, and warning the affiliates early what's up, so they can rouse up the locals to start protesting their local politicians and put heat on the Cali legislature BEFORE it passes this brainless bill, that email is about one step short of "Attention all CA affiliates, your gov't doesn't want you to make a living for yourself, grab your pitchforks and torches, here's your local Congressman's home address..."

I really don't see the point of staying in this Third World state anymore. CA has:

the highest income tax (or top 3)
the highest sales tax
extremely high LLC fees
Los Angeles roads that look like they were bombed by Al Quaida

It's time for productive people to leave and let the parasites devour themselves!

South Carolina just granted Amazon a sales tax exemption in exchange for opening a distribution center here. We also pay some of the lowest taxes in the country - the maximum sales tax on any vehicle purchase (car, boat, plane, motorcycle) is $250 lol. Plenty of beaches too.

They were making waves about this in Texas so I researched a Plan B. I came to the conclusion that opening a Nevada LLC was the way to go. Total costs were going to be ballpark $400 to get corp, agency, banking resolution etc.

Agency would be a yearly expense, and having someone deal with the tax & accounting issues too.

Some of the affs hit earlier around New England did this, even going as far as getting virtual offices to have a girl answer a NV phone and having a physical NV address. Best deal I found was around $75-100 for that a month.

Not sure if the last step is required - some people claim it is to stay above board.

That we are even having to waste our time on this nonsense shows how fucking stupid politicians are. These bills generate 0 additional revenue and cause small businesses to lose income.

use NV registered agent, get NV google voice number, save yourself some money.

Anyone planning on just jumping the Amazon ship and moving their niche product sites to buy.com's affiliate program? They seem to have as big of a selection as Amazon and their commissions don't look too bad. Plus they give affiliates a lot more content to use - video reviews to embed, etc.

Also - is anyone already using buy.com? Is there a good WordPress plugin for automating everything? I'm currently using Amaniche for my Amazon sites and it makes my life extremely easy. Products are continuously added using scheduled tasks and iMacros and I use a proprietary script to delete products that aren't active on Amazon any more, products that have no images, etc.

medicalhumor - CT affs got pulled also. I have a drop box there.

Maybe they'll take a page out of the EPN book, get ready for Amazon Quality Click Pricing bitches! :D

DONT EVEN FUNK AROUND LIKE THAT!!!!11111116

The parasites in the Nevada legislature have been trying to get an Amazon tax in Nevada, too. A better choice would be a state without a sales tax or one that's negotiated a deal with Amazon, which I think Texas has done or is about to do.

When it happened to me here in Illinois, I just switched my address to my Aunt's house across the border in Wisconsin. They reinstated my account, and it seems to be working fine so far.

And when you go to file your Illinois taxes, what are you going to do with that fat 1099 from Amazon? Just not file it to IL? Not a good idea IMHO...

If this happens, my business is out of CA and I need to understand how to structure my life so that they don't touch my affiliate money. They deserve none of it now as far as I'm concerned. I might even give myself a paycut and put more stuff on the corporate card.

This state is a shit show. But I still live here for a reason....

starting to get emails from companies about removing me from their program b/c i'm in CA. thought it wasn't passed yet...jumping the gun?

This will help. States without an income tax:

Alaska
New Hampshire
Tennessee
Florida
South Dakota
Washington
Nevada
Texas
Wyoming

Hell, I love Myrtle. I may be packing my shit here in So. Cal and moving down there sooner than I thought.

Hello,
Unfortunately, Governor Brown has signed into law the bill that we emailed you about earlier today. As a result of this, contracts with all California residents participating in the Amazon Associates Program are terminated effective today, June 29, 2011. Those California residents will no longer receive advertising fees for sales referred to Amazon.com, Endless.com, MYHABIT.COM or SmallParts.com. Please be assured that all qualifying advertising fees earned before today will be processed and paid in full in accordance with the regular payment schedule.

You are receiving this email because our records indicate that you are a resident of California. If you are not currently a resident of California, or if you are relocating to another state in the near future, you can manage the details of your Associates account here. And if you relocate to another state in the near future please contact us for reinstatement into the Amazon Associates Program.

To avoid confusion, we would like to clarify that this development will only impact our ability to offer the Associates Program to California residents and will not affect your ability to purchase from Amazon.com, Endless.com, MYHABIT.COM or SmallParts.com.

We have enjoyed working with you and other California-based participants in the Amazon Associates Program and, if this situation is rectified, would very much welcome the opportunity to re-open our Associates Program to California residents. As mentioned before, we are continuing to work on alternative ways to help California residents monetize their websites and we will be sure to contact you when these become available.

Regards,

The Amazon Associates Team
