Okay let's cut to the fucking chase.

For the past month 1/2 I've been busting my ass getting my branded "Magazine" style blog fully operational after reading:
http://www.wickedfire.com/enlightened-members/168063-flipping-website.html
http://www.wickedfire.com/enlightened-members/168970-ccarter-big-brand-checklist-how-i-represent.html
And a ton of other golden threads, but those were the main ones that I consistently followed and re-read a dozen times until I basically had them memorized.

I have a little PPC experience as well as blogging experience but nothing with crazy amounts of traffic that I intend with this project.

My skillsets include
  • Pretty Good Designer
  • Quality Copywriting
  • HTML/CSS Language
  • Basic Knowledge of SEO
  • And last but not least, persistence.

When I'm not sleeping, I'm working on this project, working on coding courses/tutorials(Digging into php/java), or i'm doing my own personal shit IRL to make money to fund this. I have no job so I do what I have to in order to pay my server bill, and to eat. I've turned my phone off because all it was bringing me was a bill. I deactivated my personal social profiles(FB, instagram etc), I've realized I don't have time for that shit and it just wastes time. I have one opportunity in this lifetime to be successful.

This is what I've done so far.
  • The niche I chose was alcohol, pretty similar to tavins. But only because I have broad knowledge in this niche as well as I want to learn more about it. (I went through bartending school about two years ago and really enjoyed it even though I probably never plan on becoming a bartender)
    ---
  • After pretty much completing my idea of what I wanted to do I went and looked at all the competitors I was going to be going up against and I know for a fact I can out-do them. So this is it, i'm in 100%.
    ---
  • Hostgator Shared Hosting. I'll get VPS when I need it.
    ---
  • Found myself a clean brandable EMD, no history, never been registered. Clean slate.
    ---
  • I saved up and bought a really nice Responsive Premium Wordpress Theme(Mobile friendly, although it still needs to be tweaked a lot from my standpoint) from themeforest that has a really nice layout. I customized it to my likings with the help of hyper6, which did an awesome job btw!
    ---
  • I made me a really professional looking Logo, Banner, Header, Favicon etc.
    ---
  • Set up my twitter, facebook, google+, and linkedin profiles to the looks of a real professional looking upcoming brand(Because that's what I "will" be). I do plan on expanding to other social media platforms but I just wanted to start with these first until everything is really going. I plan to control them with hootsuite, schedule posts, and personally interact with each one connecting with other relevant brands. Especially on twitter, for some reason I see a lot of potential on twitter as far as getting other brands to share my articles/links when the time comes.
    ---
  • I've been doing heavy research on keywords for article topics and have a pretty big list. I mainly used Google keyword planner and also did a lot of my own research finding out what people like the most, oppose to what google see's them liking the most.
    ---
  • Installed my google analytics.
    ---
  • Worked on pagespeed, this one was tricky for me. I'm not sure if it's the theme or what but i've been fiddling with it for the past couple days really trying to get it debugged but it's just one thing after another. I set up my website with cloudflare(Which helped a lot), tried a few different cache plugins while messing with their options, compressed a lot of files/images but the best I could come up with from pingdom was "91/100, faster than 60% of tested websites" which is going to be unacceptable for me after reading CCarter's thread http://www.wickedfire.com/traffic-content/166122-240-increase-search-traffic-3-days-mito-tags-speed.html
    ---
  • So now that all that is pretty much done, I currently have 13 really nice articles that i've written and finished. All ranging from 500 words to 1500 words with no keywords besides the h1 header. I plan to have smaller articles and even bigger ones as well. Not following that dumb 500 word article rule I see most going by, I've read really good 100 word articles and really good 3000 word articles. If it's good, it's good, period.

Okay, now you know where I'm at.

I'm going to continue to keep this journal updated, not only to keep me going hard at it - but hopefully some of my mistakes I make will help someone else. Wickedfire has helped me beyond imagine, this is the least I can do. And I hope to contribute even more down the road once my knowledge gets broader.

I know this is going to be a long journey, and probably a hard one at that. I completely understand that I'm going to fuck up a lot most likely and i'm going to fail at some things but that is okay. As long as I learn from what I end up doing wrong then i'm more than happy with that, because that just means I'll be coming back even stronger with my next venture/project. I will only improve, it's when I stop improving and learning is when I will take a step back and re-evaluate things.

And to those newbies out there(Which I am one as well), anything you get yourself into is most likely going to get discouraging. I get discouraged all the time and even depressed.

But what I find myself doing to get my mind back on the motivated path is a few things, find those things that work for you!
  • I watch a lot of motivational videos(There is a thread somewhere here with a bunch of them! Go watch them!) Every time I get tired, depressed, unmotivated etc, I seriously watch a couple from youtube and go right back at it.
    ---
  • Think of a lifestyle you want, a house you want, maybe a car. Anytime you get discouraged, remind yourself what kind of lifestyle you want to live. Remind yourself where you want to be and what you want to have! You can have anything you want! Sometimes you have to walk through the rain to get to the rainbow.
    ---
  • For me, the biggest motivation was when I found myself waking up and my first thoughts were wondering how I was going to eat today.

"He who says he can and he who says he can't, are both usually right"

NOTE:Sorry for the super long post, I really didn't intend on writing all this. So for those of you who read, I shall at least make it worthwhile. I'll try to keep them in the little attachment thing for those of you who browse WF at work or around family.

But i'm posting boobies and asses with every update I make. Well, because I love boobies and asses.

Sweet niche. A well cared for authority site will win you in the long run, seems to be a good plan.

If you find yourself scrapping for cash, pump out a few local business websites or what not. You can easily charge $500+ for little catalog sites that don't require much development or maintenance and you can usually get them done within a day.

Having clients is never anyone on here's dream, but man it's a quick and easy way to some good money.

I have definitely thought about this! I've just never been one that's good with the approaching aspect as funny as it sounds since I'm building into a niche that is based off approachment. Not mention I really don't have a portfolio to show off my work yet. But I'm definitely taking this into consideration. Thanks man.

Congratulations on deciding to finally take action.
I'm going to follow this thread closely, as I'm trying to create a "brandable website" for myself.

Wish you the best and please don't stop posting updates :)

Looking forward to this and good luck, but please change your avatar it makes me feel weird :D

UPDATE

Over the weekend this is what got done:

  • Wrote 3x 1000+ word articles
    ---
  • Worked on my PageSpeed and got it to load faster than 80%(93/100 Performance) of websites tested on Pingdom. My front page is around 700kb(I don't see how anyone could get anything lower without taking out all kinds of images. My background alone is about 300kb)
    ---
  • Interacted with some niche related twitter accounts, and I think I may have a really nice oppurtunity to get one of my articles re-tweeted and shared. So i'm super excited about that!

Plans for this week:
  • Start working on getting indexed! I've waited a while to submit my site to XML sitemap, and validate with w3c. So that is next. For those of you who may ask why I waited, I guess I was scared lol. I wanted to get all the bugs out and get it actually looking good before I wanted people to see it.
    ---
  • Write a few more articles

Question:
Is there any suggestions on adding articles per week? Is it okay that I continue to submit 2-3 articles a week? I see a lot of guys saying they submit an article a week and do that for now on. Is there a reason for this?

You should be able to get your background well below 300kb, is it an image? Have you compressed as much as possible in PS? Do you really need it, or could a simpler graphic background be used instead?

On a similar sort of venture. Those are very good threads you linked which I have found invaluable. However, one thing I would say I have learnt is that you should never stop learning in this game about marketing and business in general. In my spare time I always try and top up the knowledge I gain from my experience. Depends what type of entrepreneur you want to be. Also, another thing I have learnt is that you should not trust the data others give until you have the data yourself, tested in front of you. Keep on hustlin.

Good read, you sound like you have the "eye of the tiger". Don't let it go to waste.

One part reminded me of...

David Brent:
'If you want the rainbow, you got to put up with the rain'. Do you know which philosopher [makes quotation marks with fingers] said that? Dolly Parton. And people say she's just a big pair of tits.

Keep us updated, yeah?

Yes it's a wood background, I found a similar one that's repeatable without notice and that really cut down on the load so i'm happy about that.

Very true! I'm constantly as well reading SEO blogs and just as you said keeping your knowledge topped out on new findings.

Hahahah I like that.
I will for sure keep you guys updated!

Thanks for all the responses and comments guys.

It sounds like you have the mechanical side of the equation nailed, now you have to work on the relationships with others in the niche. Follow them on Facebook and Twitter, interact with them, suck up gently, kiss some ass, but get in the clique. And there always is a clique of bloggers that are leaders in the niche.

The networking and cross linking opportunities are the real key to the game at this stage. Also, keep pumping out good content on a consistent basis. You will find people will start returning to see what you have written, ie ending up on their surfing trail every day.

Yes for sure! I've been interacting with a lot of related niches on twitter and just basically as you aforementioned "sucking ass". Telling them how awesome this article, recipe etc. Hopefully to get noticed just a tad bit more to get followed and even retweeted down the road.

Thanks for the comment man.

Big thanks to sk4rlet btw! Little things to you are huge things to others.

I will get an update to you guys sometime tomorrow, got a lot done!

Update!

Super excited! - About 20x +1,000 word magazine quality articles are currently being written, for free! Got in touch with my old english teacher in highschool and she's letting me use them to write articles as she grades them as well. This is for the senior editor program, bunch of awesome writers! I read a lot of their stuff and it's very very awesome. Gave her the topics yesterday, they should be done sometime this coming week.

-These past few days I've taken everything back off cloudflare and just did the tough work myself in regards to pagespeed. Got it pretty dang good now. A big factor was re-adjusting all images with PS "Save for web". Cut about 200kb off the page! And you can't even tell a difference.

-Made me my disclaimer page, career page, privacy policy etc. (Using the career page for authority, as I'm not actually looking to hire anyone. Just got this tip myself! )

-Personally followed about 900 niche related twitter accounts yesterday. They then suspended my account for like 12 hours or something. About 30 followed back. I'm going to buy some followers and FB likes here soon.

-Still not indexed by google, small traffic from other little things like twitter/facebook. Under 100 UV's.

-Now is about the time I'm going to dig into guestblogging and directories so I can get the ball rolling since i'm pretty much fully operational now. This is going to be a whole new world for me.

Feeling excited! :party-smiley-004:

Why move off of CloudFlare? Free plan works just fine and boosts speed quite a bit.

The only reason to buy FB likes is to get 25, so you can get a custom URL. The onlky reason to buy followers is initial social proof, and it's not even that important.

Get a free trial of BuzzStream once your site has a few quality articles on it and start putting together blog lists for collaboration - that will be your fastest ticket to natural growth.

I was having a bunch of issues with cloudflare messing with my WP theme quiet a bit. Tried every option possible and even a few supports, no avail. I do agree though, the boost it gives is impressive. Although now i'm off of it, I do plan to get back on cloudflare.

I want the likes and followers to just get a boost of authority. I feel that every little bit counts.

And i'm going to definitely check out buzzstream, thanks. Sounds interesting.

UPDATE:

So i'm super upset that I haven't been keeping on my journal here like
planned but i'm getting back to it I promise!

Here are some things that got done, what i'm currently working on, and current issues.

What got done?:

-Got a shit ton of 1000+ word articles wrote. (Dripping them, 2-3 articles a week)

-Finished up some SEO like meta keywords/description

-Touched up some social media profiles, got a few thousand followers on twitter and facebook. Working on instagram right now.

-Joined a few related forums, going to start posting and getting to know the community a little. Get my brand in the signature, little extra traffic. Did the same on some blogs, just posted a few small things - no advertising my site yet. Just trying to build a little trust and get noticed first.

Upcoming Plans:
-Continue to work on pagespeed, seriously just can't win with this one.

-Get some more articles and keyword ideas

-Find a way to get some authority on my page. As in a way to look like a bigger brand. Maybe some logos of big brand magazines and front it like "Partnered with X magazine, etc etc"?

-Interlink my content a little more.

-Find a new article layout style. I'm just sick and tired of the basic:
Heading
Content
Sub-heading
content
etc

-Work on some coding tutorials

-Get some guest blogging going!

Current Problems/Issues:
-Still barely any traffic, not ranking for any keywords yet.

-Scared to move back to cloudflare, but I freaking love the page speed.
Just don't wanna deal with all the hassle of it messing shit up again.

-Still not indexed by google, yahoo, or bing.

-Back hurts, I need to get out!

Looking forward to really start ranking and getting some traffic. Although I thought this was going to be easier. Just means I have to keep at it some more. I think some guestblogging/backlinks will get the ball rolling once I get around to it.

Still not indexed?

Please check your WP settings and / or robots.txt, .htaccess

My sites are indexed in a day (3 days at most) when I just drop one link somewhere.

Ranking is another story, bjut getting indexed should not be a problem.

If nothing else helps:
Google webmaster tools account, get crawled
