So those of you who have made it, how long did it take before it really jumped into being successful? Just looking at what the average for people is around here

6 months for me. Some site only 3 months. Depends on keywords because my traffic is only organic from SEO and no PPC involved.

Think it depends a lot on what you consider an actual starting point. Your first search for "make money online" or the start of your first SEO/PPC campaign.

I'd say start of first campaign. Both SEO and PPC work, it'd just be good if people told which they do, that's why I made it a public poll.

Probably about 4 months for my PPC marketing, but it's not the first online venture I've had. Years ago, I created a site that went from 500 visits in the first month, to 5,000 in the second, to 50,000 in the 3rd, and topped out a year later at half a million unique visitors per month. Popup ads were all the rage back then, and getting $1500/mo checks for popups, and quite a bit from zip submits weren't uncommon - and pretty good for a high schooler with $100/mo expenses.

Then came the hosting business, which took off pretty much immediately. Got in on the ground floor of a server reseller opportunity, and quickly became the hosting company's largest reseller within 2 months. The key in both these ventures (the first being copying another website's idea and improving on it) was being in on the ground floor. If you can get in at the start of a new opportunity (think Facebook ads months ago, or maybe MySpace self-serve ads whenever they launch), it's easier to have things take off quicker.

took me about 6 months til i made a $5k profit in a month... then i got distracted by my own online retail business which is bringing me in nearly $500 a day at the moment, so I've sort of stopped affiliate marketing for now, but i use what i learnt to market my own products.

Yes for me, its taking 3-4 months depending upon the age of website along with other organic SEO strategies. No paid efforts.

Something has got to be wrong with me. I have been trying various things for about 2 years and still havn't achieved what I would call success.

For me it hasn't really taken off yet. It's hovering a few meters above the ground, sometimes it touches the soil then bumps back in the air but it didn't reach the safe heights so far. I'm working hard on improving my piloting skills.

Same here. I've had a few successful campaigns and sites, however nothing stable. And by successful, I'm talking earning a few hundred bucks, if that. I won't give up though.

You need both targeted traffics and content that convert. I had bad experienced by made only $2 with CJ by 2 years ago and made nothing thereafter. My balance has been reduced and went to $0 because of inactive, then my CJ account had been closed since they decided I am horse shit and should be kicked out. I have less and less hope, feel sick and try various ways to make some sales, following some gurus but it didn't work. One day I just found one keyword which has some search and 0 competitors. I re-open CJ account, registered domain name optimized for those keyword, put content up and did some directory submission. I got ranked #1 since there is no competitors in that keyword. Surprisingly, I made sales, not one or two but four in the first day. I made over $100 from affiliate at the first time. More surprise, my site got ranked for another related keyword which has more search and brought me more visitors. That was unexpected. However, those my very first keyword has no people search for them anymore, but still, my site ranked for another keyword instead and made regularly sales until today.

Junk content = 0 conversion, believe me. I'm lucky that I found one great writer from here, by chance actually. She has done an excellent job for me and working together until now for my other projects. :D

P.S. my traffics come from only organic results and no PPC since I am really bad at that. I made $2 from lead but paid $50 to adwords at the beginning. WOW!!
