"An eternity in hell" is kind of what life as we know it is (or as close to it as we would be able to appreciate). I don't mean that negatively, but just that us being mortal = suffering for survival = not heaven, thus more like hell. Are you saying you want out of this life? Otherwise I think the eternity in hell part is what happens after you die, not instead. :)

If there was a way of dying instead of being in a hell situation you wouldn't be able to appreciate the relief anyways, if you could you would still be conscious and thus still in hell...

Well, the first sentence is true in a sense. I mean if you can tell the difference then you are still living, if you can't then it's kind of irrelevent.

I think about this stuff almost daily. It's extremely depressing to me as well. The bittersweet sadness that comes along with the joy of everyday living and knowing it's slipping away a little more every moment makes it all that much more unbearably ironic.
 
How the fuck can you possibly imagine death? Have you ever talked to anybody that has gone through it? If you questioned people who "experienced death" in the form of actually dying and coming back to life, many tell the tale of seeing something else out there.

The whole idea of an afterlife comes from the idea that you have a soul, one that was created when you were born. If your soul wasn't there before you were born (which it wouldn't be), how could you know what it was like before you were born? You couldn't tell and there would be nothing, because you didn't exist. But right now you do exist which means there is a possibility of a "soul" or something of the sort that will exist when your physical body goes.

Do we have souls? Maybe, maybe not. That's not the point though, the point is the statement "Think about life before your existence and how it was" is irrelevant. You didn't exist before you existed, now you do exist.

The upside is that when you finally do die you won't know it. Feelings of depression and worry can only exist in a thinking brain, so death itself is nothing to worry about.

Basically, the way it was before we existed will be the way it is after we exist. The soul didn't exist, it existed, it doesn't exist. Done. (By the way, I don't believe in a soul, but replace soul with consciousness and it's basically the same here)

Hey, once more. YOU DON'T KNOW THAT DEATH IS LIKE. Have you ever experienced it? Talked to anybody that has? The only evidence we would have are people who claim to have died and come back to life (in a hospital miracle). These people say they saw heaven, God, afterlife, whatever they saw. I'm not saying any of them are right, but I'm saying the only "evidence" we would have is completely contrary to your argument.

Hey, once again you're comparing apples to oranges. People who believe in and argue religion are arguing that something else exists other than the physical body that is created. Something else is created with it, something that doesn't just vanish from existence like your physical body will.

If science were to somehow prove that there is life after death, then there's no argument. However, since it cannot be measured or observed, then it must not exist. At least that's the science community's stance on the metaphysical.

Aside from experiencing paranormal things myself, how can one discredit the accounts of those that have died and come back to life? The details of these stories may differ from one person to the next but what do they all have in common? They were all conscious and aware of the fact that they died... even if momentarily.

And like SUP3RNOVA mentioned, we cannot liken death to before existence because we didn't have a soul before our existence, or energy. I cannot provide any facts to my claim but it's just a hunch that I have. I am not here to argue and defend my stance as absolute truth. I am open to the idea that I might be DEAD WRONG. But I'm here to learn and grow as a human being and respect everybody's beliefs.

People just need to learn to relax and at least give some respect to the STANCE someone is taking - not how the PERSON takes it (I'm not talking in extremist terms).

Nobody has all the answers, and the best way to find out is by exploring every option out there. My opinion is formed from searching the physical world and through my mind and what I feel exists. I've seen things happen, and I've heard and thought about things happening. Both have led me to the conclusions I've reached today.

Sure people can die and come back. (happens all the time at the hospital...we both know this)

Now, do you trust the random firing of neurons as a person has died and then is resuscitated? What makes his story reliable at all?

If a person is tripping on some drug and sees, hears, and believes shit is going on that really isn't there are we to believe them? Of course not, because we know their brain isn't functioning properly.

Now if a person has just DIED, was their brain functioning properly? No. Whatever there story is...isn't necessarily true for the same reason that we don't believe the guy in the corner tripping on acid when he says "that leprechauns have now entered the room".

His story would be reliable because it would be supported by many similar stories. Certainly we can't give them all of our trust because they're claiming to be places we don't physically think is possible, but they would be only link we really have right now. And the fact that there are many many cases of this only adds to the possible credibility of it.
