I'm pretty sure the cost of living in SF is high. I know here in Texas it's low and I can't imagine a family of 4 living on less than $100k/yr.

You apparently have never been poor. It's very possible for a family of 4 to live on less than 100k a year in Texas. Not sure about the Houston / Austin area, but Dallas / Ft. Worth and pretty much any where else in TX it's very doable.
