Man leaves home for a week so it can be decorated and 15 squatters move in | Mail Online

In the middle of completely refurbishing his five-bedroom house, Connan Gupta felt he deserved a week off.

It is a decision he is now regretting because 15 squatters took advantage of his short absence to occupy the £700,000 property.

The jobless Italians changed the locks and have taken up residence along with their three dogs and two cats.

They claim the fact they cannot afford to rent gives them the right to take over the Victorian property in Camberwell, South-East London.

Police are powerless to intervene because squatting is a civil rather than criminal offence.

Mr Gupta, a 40-year-old hotelier, has been forced to seek alternative accommodation and instruct a solicitor to have the intruders evicted.

He left the house on October 10 for his week off and returned on Monday to find he couldn’t open the door. A squatter’s rights notice was posted in a window.

‘This is just ridiculous,’ he said. ‘Everything’s in there. All my worldly possessions, clothes, valuables, and medication I need for a skin condition. It is hellish. I always triple-lock the house and when I went away I made sure everything was locked.

‘It is really scary that you can go on holiday and come back and your house has been taken. I’m profoundly shocked that this can happen.

‘I tried to open the door and found the locks had been changed. Then I saw the note, and banged on the door saying I was the owner and a voice inside said “Just go away”.

‘I just have to sit here and wait. It’s as if the squatters have more rights than I do.’

Italian students changed the locks of the house and said they couldn't afford to pay rent while they were studying in London

The squatters claim the front door was open when they arrived at the house two weeks ago.

One, Valentina, 26, said: ‘None of us have any money or jobs. I don’t feel guilty about being here because no one else had been here for at least two years, the neighbours told us.

‘There’s no sink, no running water, no electricity, no carpets and the place was filthy. All of the owner’s stuff was packed away and stored.

‘I’ve never squatted before but when three of us found it we called our friends who are having difficulties of their own and told them about it.

When the owner came on Monday in the morning we told him we were squatting, and he was really aggressive.

‘We’ll go if the court tells us to but until then we’re staying. If he wants his things he’ll have to wait. If I find a job then I’ll start paying rent like a normal person.’

They have turned the front room into a sixth bedroom and are using Mr Gupta’s wardrobes to store their clothes. They are also making use of his three leather sofas, sauna, hundreds of DVDs and television.

An eviction hearing is expected to be held in the next two weeks.

The guy played it all wrong. You get a friend to rough you up a little then you tell the police they broke in, beat you up and left you to die in a ditch somewhere.

Many would be surprised to know there are similar laws here in California - if you leave a property vacant and people break in and change the locks on you and you don't discover it quickly you can't have them kicked out by the police but have to go the court route. In fact if it goes unnoticed/unchallenged by the owner for a certain number of years they can legally take the property from you and now own it themselves.

How's this any different from trespassing? =/

The only difference between squatting and trespassing is that the former has a small amount of legal protection. That said, the horror stories you hear about property owners losing their pads to squatters are exceptions to the rule. Every state is different, but these idiots are usually ousted. Problem is, it takes a long time to do it. Because you "have" to do it legally.

I don't know what things are like in Italy, but I know quite a bit about squatting and squatters here. They're cowards. Most of them don't want trouble. If you make it clear (calmly) you're willing to go to the wall to protect your property outside the legal system, most of them will move.

They want to sleep and shit for free, but they don't want to die for it. If you're calm and clear about your intentions, you can resolve things without escalating it.

Its easily sorted by hiring a few heavy handed brutes to kick them out. Happened to me while I was in a squat in Spain (I was just at a party in a squat when it happened not living there).

He was unfortunate going to the police. Now he's fucked. This could take months to sort out.

A builder friend of my dads had a bunch of travellers turn up and try to camp on his land a couple of years back. He just turned up in the morning with a bout 30 of his mates in trucks carrying pickaxes and sledgehammers, and said "You're not going to be here by nightfall, are you lads?". They travellers fucked off sharpish. If he'd have tried the legal route, they'd probably still bloody be there.

what disgusting trash.. people have no pride anymore.. I can't imagine a line of thinking that would allow me to squat at someones place let alone tell the owner i'm not leaving.

I would hire someone to ring the doorbell 24/7 so they couldn't sleep and have them bang on windows and do every annoying thing possible until they left. They won't want to squat if you make living there hell... within legality.

Is that a spider on the porch? My my, I should probably bug bomb with extra fumes whilst I'm away.

They are gypsies right? Can't imagine real italians being this fucked up. Well.. i can.. but this is a typical gypsie-thing to do.
