I'm so confused right now.

The other day I ran a campaign (one I came up with in a dream actually).. made 300+ right off the bat first day. I had some other things to attend to so I paused my traffic in the evening before dinner, went and did what I had to do.

I woke up, and I noticed my revenue had more than DOUBLED. I was like WTF. All traffic was paused. I know this for a fact. I looked at the bandwidth log for my server and saw I got a HUGe burst of traffic 4 hours after I paused everything (just as i was going to sleep), and that lasted for 3-4 hours.

I thought maybe one of my traffic sources ran something on accident and gave me a little bonus.. so I went to investigate further (obviously I want this traffic, whatever it was. It converted way better than the traffic that was already doing well).

- I checked prosper, and ALL the referrers/keywords are blank, and I'd say 90% of the browsers are IE. I thought maybe it was some weak ass ddos attempt, but all the IP's look legit, they dont originate from china or anything and their behavior as far as going to the other parts of my site matched regular traffic. not to mention they converted better than my daytime traffic...
- I went to check my server logs but they cleared out at 7am (the mother fucker) so thats gone forever. i looked at some basic logs that track for a few days and they were just 100% useless...
- I called all my traffic sources (theres only 2 for this campaign). i triple checked there were no mistakes/errors where they sent me traffic they werent supposed to .. and that was all as it should be. it also doesnt show up in any traffic sources

has this ever happened to any of you guys? I made as much as I did in one hour as I did all day, I'd really like to know where it came from..

I actually just put up a mailing campaign with aweber, which Ive never done before, but I just can't see a mailing campaign giving a burst of traffic that big and that fast, then dying off (I dont have any autoresponders loaded in yet beyond the first one, so I know it wasnt that).

The only thing i could remotely comprehend is google indexed my site for a very large keyword (my domain is pretty good) and then deindexed me, but i just cant really see that happening either as I did no seo work at all, and also that prosper usually shows keywords from serps

Been on any Ambien benders recently? Maybe you unpaused your traffic in a waking sleep. I know a guy who popped some of those and and ran his dad's truck into my building's security gate. We assumed it was the beer and the jager bombs but he swears it was the Ambien. I forgot what we were talking about.

Any luck tracking down the source(s)?

How did the traffic back out for the advertiser? Ask your AM - if it didnt convert for them, chances are this was some kind of competitor CPA DDos trying to get you knocked off the offer by making all your leads shit quality. If it converted well for the advertiser....err...keep working at it, figure it out and then PM me!

you directlink to your own page? i mean, it cant be someone fucking up stealing your ad?

Nope, it's not like it's showing up in the tracking and then going to their offer, it's literally like someone is just sending traffic right to my page, including my offers and everything.

I will check with compliance about lead quality

Dreaming is your brain's way of problem solving for all possible (or even impossible) scenarios. Many great inventions and inspirations have been spawned from a dream.

The song Yesterday came to Paul McCartney in a dream.

Friedrich August Kekulé had a dream that lead to the discovery of Structure Theory, the understanding that carbon makes up most of organic life.

Elias Howe dreamed the idea of putting the hole at the end of sewing needle, after trying for years to invent a sewing machine.

Award winning writers, musicians, mathematicians, scientists, and the like, have all said that they had their groundbreaking ideas come from a dream. If I remember correctly Ben Franklin said something about a lot of his inventions coming from dreams he had.

So, yea, dreams can be can have amazing revelations as your unconscious mind works out whatever problem you are mulling over.

Marketcake,

You might want to get a better analytics package, losing logs bites. With email campaigns it is possible for messages to sit around a little, meaning the campaigns sent earlier weren't opened till hours after their sent times. Four hours could be a different timezone.

Funny you mentioning ghosts, I've heard of some advertising networks having problems clearing the caches of all their servers -- might take hours. Turned out if you paused your campaigns every two hours you'd get another hour of exposure in random parts of the country. Delivery systems are much better now, but something similar may have happened.

What you'll want to do is come up with another campaign with a similar structure. Set it up for a similar time, and kick it off. If you get the same results then keep doing it till all stops working. Just make sure you are getting those server logs, you'll discover all kinds of interesting things, but you need the data.

Best,

Justin
