hey folks
A client who just came to me has this as a part of his domain "4you"
His keyword is somewhat competitive so before I get to work, I would like to know from you guys if having that thing could get in the way of my efforts?
The site has 150+ pages so transferring it to a new domain wont be easy either
Suggestions would be very appreciated

thanks

Just do what he's paying you to do but warn him his domain choice could hinder the results

Assuming that he is substituting "4" instead of "for" I would give him a very detailed explanation of why it does not work that way. It is his dollar but you want to make sure that you warn him ahead of time so it does not come back on you. A little cya is never a bad idea.

Anytime somebody is paying me to do something and I think they are going about it the wrong way I always try to be as clear as possible that yes I will do it the way they want because they are paying the bills but if it was my site I would do it "THIS" way and why. Sometimes they change their mind sometimes not but when things do not go as well as they hope it does not come back on me.

Why would a number in the domain hinder the results?

If the client is aiming for his domain to be exact match to the keyword, which contain "for" in it, then having the domain name contain "4" instead of "for" it won't be exact match.

If they're trying to brand their company name and that's more important than that specific SEO aspect, then go ahead and use the domain with the number.

I guess I should have been clearer. "4 you" or "for you" is not a part of the keyword we're targeting. For example if the keyword is "electric lamps" the domain is "electriclamps4you.com" Could that hinder results?

The only downside I can see is that it impairs word-of-mouth advertising (assuming the offer isn't garbage).

I bought products from a website which ended in 4U (for you). i.e.: magicspoons4U.com.

I recommended it to a bunch of people, but I'd always have to clarify: "that's magic spoons for you... number four, letter u."

The person may or may not remember the URL correctly, and not find the site.

If it's purely for SEO purposes to drive SE traffic, then it doesn't really matter.

But if he/she is trying to brand the site for offline marketing--as others mentioned, using "4" can be confusing.

Just because he has a number in his domain doesn't mean that he won't rank well.

It is a good idea to first tell him to try and get an exact match, but if he can't then his normal site should do.
