Hey,

Noticing something strange lately..

I launched a campaign about 12 hours ago and T202 showed a bunch of 'real' clicks through my ads, showing different keywords, but no referral. I found it strange and then noticed that the IP's are the same except for the last digit segment.

Whois showed they are all from Softlayer (web hosting company). Is this one of those keyword spying webtools that aggregates ad data?

10 clicks in the last 8 hours - 8 of them 'real'...

If not one of those webtools - then what?

Someone is using their server as a tunnel proxy to view your ads. I take it these are US ads?

I've noticed this too. What is this campaign on, Google? i think it was either Google or Yahoo I saw this on. I'm guessing it's a bot.

Yea its on Adwords..

Theres a shit load of clicks from them..some 'real' some not (T202)..

What the hell - is this costing me $?

IPS:

208.43.208.13[0-9]
67.228.247.117
67.228.247.114

(58 hits in the last 24 hours)

Think I should ban the traffic?

I'd suggest you do that as soon as possible. It could be a bot or as some one said, a proxy so it's only costing you and you won't be making that money back.

I don't think they were actually clicking the ads because the traffic had no referrals..

But they were pulling my tracking links off the ads and going through them because it was completely screwing up 202 for me. I reported it to softlayer - maybe they can find out what it is.

They often cache the ads

I have shut down Adwords campaigns and still receive visits from these tools weeks after the ads stop showing. It doesn't appear like I was being charged for them. Adwords seems to filter most of these off your bill. The IP exclusion tool doesn't seem to help if they have already already cached your ads. It's best to add the list to the IP exclusion tool when you first start a campaign, but of course, I often forget.

I only wish FB was on the ball, unfortunately most bot traffic is included on my billing at FB.

Ooh I forgot to add it to Adwords exclusion list. I only banned from my site..

All my servers have the vast majority of netblocks belonging to hosting companies (SoftLayer, ThePlanet, RackSpace etc) blocked at the transport level. There's no reason for someone to be randomly browsing the net on those servers 99% of the time.

I'd advise you to do the same.

Yea I banned on my server and on Adwords. I'll keep an eye on my logs and on 202 for any more bots.
