Adwords Editor Questions

I'm having two issues with Ad Words Editor:

1) I am trying to bid-shift a campaign I have been running for three days. I was taught to-

-adwords editor >custom view filter>advanced bid feature – bid down all KW in position 1-3 by 20%. Make sure box is checked that says “do not set kw max cpc bids to values lower than thr minimum cpc bids” > change bids

>return to filter view > advanced bid change – all kw in position 4-8 increase by 20%

>return to filter view > advanced bid change – all kw in position 9-12 increase by 15%

>save changes & upload

Needless to say I can't for the fucking life of me figure out how to do that. I don't think those options even exist on AWE. Is there another way to optimize KW by their positions? Is that even what I should be doing?

2) How do I swap out one ad and replace with another to split test? I am using spreadsheets to set up my campaign. I made the changes there, then uploaded into AWE. When I do that all of a sudden it tells me something like 18,000 ads have been uploaded? I am only testing this campaign with something like 150 KW and 2 ads per ad group so that is obviously fucked.

No I haven't been a douche I have been trying to figure this shit out since yesterday, reading everything I can find, but nothing has helped so far.

Thanks,

Gregg

1) By bid shift do you mean you are trying to change the position the ads show at?

You could if most of your bids are about the same still. Ie you put everything at $1, you could click on the whole account, then keywords so you see all keywords, then sort by position and lower the bids that are showing in spots 1 - 2.9 most often. Like if everything is $1 jsut lower those. And possibly raise the ones that are showing to far down.

There are more advanced ways to do that but this is quite easy and I still use it.

2) Swap out is not the same as split test. Swap out means change the ad that is there and you will lose your data. I would click on each campaign, then ads, then add an ad to each campaign. You can copy an ad then paste it into the same or another campaign then mod what you want.

You might want to copy paste an ad to textpad so you have the title, headlines, display url, and destination url all in one place to copy from.

Feel free to explain better or your experience with the above.

The way I like to work on adwords is not to worry about everything but sort the keywords by impressions or clicks and concentrate on the high traffic ones.

Hey Drake,

First off thanks for your help man- I appreciate it.

By bid shift do you mean you are trying to change the position the ads show at?
-Yes. The thought was that the best place for my ads to appear is in the middle of page one, not necessarily 1st or 2nd position etc. So if I have ads appearing in position 1, I should be lowering my bids to move the ad down on the page. Do you agree or is this one of those everyone does it differently deals?

You could if most of your bids are about the same still. Ie you put everything at $1, you could click on the whole account, then keywords so you see all keywords, then sort by position and lower the bids that are showing in spots 1 - 2.9 most often. Like if everything is $1 jsut lower those. And possibly raise the ones that are showing to far down.
-so you don't do this in Ad Words Editor you just do all this manually in your Ad Words account? I guess that makes sense and I should have thought of that myself.

-Regarding swapping out ads- I have two ads per ad group right now. My issue is that I set it up so my headline is the keyword, so I guess technically I have 150 different ads??? I have a small KW list I am just testing (this is actually my first campaign). Forgetting that- I know which Ad copy (line 1 and 2) is converting better, so I am supposed to get rid of the lower performing ad and replace with a new one to run it against my better ad correct?

Thanks again for the help,

Gregg

No all that I was talking about was in GWE. I usually use it rather than the online editor.

There are ways to look at all keywords there and I do that to look for problems like low quality scores or bad CTR on a high impressions word.

For your headline are using dynamic keyword insertion or did you through a spreadsheet put in 150 keywords? ie {KeyWord: E-Cigarettes Rock!} This show their keyword is possible but if it cant be shown it shows "e-cigarettes rock".

Personally I dont consider dynamic keyword insertion different ads.

The group is still new. Depending on your volume I might not do anything about what you see yet.

Google will split test for you and show the better performing ad more by the default (Unless you changed it). That works fairly well. Once you think enough peple have seen an ad and not clicked it you could pause the ad.

I usually pause ads rather than change them. It is easier to rememeber what you have tried and hasnt worked when you open it in 6 months.
