How does Adwords determine keyword pricing?

For example, a few of the keywords i want to buy have no competition when you search for them in google - so you'd think the pricing would be fairly cheap - but instead they charge an arm and a leg.

So instead of lowering keyword prices and generating competition - they decide to keep the prices high and therefore nobody buys these specific terms. So why don't they lower keyword prices, to generate fair competition, and make more income? - Instead of keeping everybody away.

Does the Ad itself, also effect keyword pricing?

Also what happens if a campaign doesn't start sending traffic immediately - 0 views? Do they sometimes hold for a review? It seems i have a lot of issues initiating my campaigns.

The ad effects quality score and quality score effects pricing. When there are no ads it may be that the subject is restricted (ie gambling, tobacco products, ....) or trademarked. (and the trademark holder objected to people bidding on their trademark)

We need to know what keywords your having problems with if you want more help.

Reviews also occur on the content network. Usually if you use image ads. When under review they will give you either no or very little impressions.

I'm currently testing adult keywords, but within their guidelines. I'm just using their search and not content partners. They usually start my campaigns instantly, im just unpausing and making minor changes. So far only 1 of my 5 campaigns has seen traffic - so somethings on hold or not working. For example anything with the keyword lesbian was charging .40+, and most of those terms had no competition and shouldn't be blocked. So i'd have to pull 1:60 ratios to pull a profit, which is near impossible for these niches/paysites.

I was just looking at my stats and noticed i made over 200% profit with my adwords the past two years, so i figured i might as well start it back up. I guess i could afford to pay the higher keyword charges, but it difenitely makes it more challenging to pull a profit.
