I have seen this happen a couple of times and I have no idea how it happens.

I type in a keyword related to my merchant program.

One of my affiliates has a high ranking in google for a direct affiliate link,.

Google, actually ranks mysite.com/aff=1234 (ie. with the affiliate ID) higher than mysite.com

How does that happen?

The number of sites linking to the affiliate link is probably much higher than the number of sites linking to the domain itself. This would make sense if whoever runs the site has been marketing/selling/spamming the hell out of that link as opposed to the one that just goes to the base domain.

I can see how that would make sense, but in this instance the affiliate is a HIGHLY respected charity organisation. I would be very surprised if they had been spamming at all.

I've made some killer money when my aff links have ranked liked this. Pure luck.
