THere is one coming up in NYC in August. To past attendees, is it worth paying the extra dough for the educational sessions, or just go to the exhibit hall? Weird thing is, I can't see any descriptions of the classes on the web site. Or am I just blind from looking at too many boobs on this forum?

Having never attended the Affiliate Summit sessions I can't vouch for the value of attending. I guess it depends on where you are at in your AM career but the general consensus is the classes are generally a waste of money.

Most people just go to the exhibit hall (I know alot of people who just hang out outside the hall and never even bothering getting a pass). Its a very good networking event and more focused than Ad-Tech IMO.

I went to Affiliate Summit in Boston last summer, and the "educational" sessions were absolute shit. I'm glad that CJ comped my ticket, otherwise I would've been really pissed about spending money on it.

Just do the exhibit hall and talk to people... Get everyone's card and when you get home after the drunken parties... start checking all of the companies/people out.

Also, try to find someone who has been drinking at the bar for a while who knows something about marketing. After they've been drinking for a while, just keep asking questions - you'll find out a lot of good information that they wouldn't otherwise tell you.

Sessions are shit, just get an exhibit hall pass and network / party.

TRUE THAT - pure useless! After like a full day you'll maybe find one cool stat that you didn't know b4 - id say the seminars and junk are more for like the the advertisers that have no clue how the cpa realm works.

Descriptions for each session at on the agenda at Affiliate Summit East 2009 Agenda | Affiliate Summit

For anybody that has attended sessions, which did you go to and dislike?

What would you like to see covered? Content for each Affiliate Summit is based on the feedback we get from previous ones.

I've never been to any because there descriptions are even lame for example this year:

Microniches - The Way to Mega Profits
Session 1a
Location: Classroom A - Gibson
Time: 12:00pm-1:00pm
Learn about how some affiliates are promoting products in a wide variety of very small and focused niches, also known as micro-niches, which little have competition and inexpensive ad costs.

Click Bank huh, probably gong to be an un-informative pitch session.

These sessions are made for people just getting into the industry or people with no idea of the industry.

Most of the time in my experience the speakers dont give valuable info unless you are a complete newb. The best thing to do is setup meetings and network. It takes time and work on your end to do, and if you just show up expecting to get something, good luck. Exhibit halls are a complete waste of time IMHO.
Advice: go to a small meetup. A) free B) ONLY networking is done C) you get up front, immed and current info.
We just did one at A4D with SMAX and it KILLED.

That's one of dozens of sessions - we understand that there are many types of affiliates, which is why there are four sessions running concurrently.

And no, there are not pitches at Affiliate Summit - it's not permitted and speakers are well aware of this.

Anybody that does pitch is never invited back.

So, what do you want to see?

I am going to Affiliate Summit (exhibit hall only) and am stoked. Gonna be a lot of fun.

He has a point though.. for people running business with small to medium marketing budgets and newbs brand new to affiliate marketing, some of these sessions would be great for them (about branding, optimizing websites, tweaking search campaigns, social meda, etc) but for performance marketers who are playing in the CPM and CPA media buying arena and have already conquered PPC and SEM, I only see one session (Session 7c) which has anything to do w/ affiliate/media agency relationships and building successful campaigns from media buying - and honestly, that sessions looks like total BS.

I attended several sessions at ASW09 and they all were completely newb oriented. A total waste of time and everyone was dipping out after about 10 minutes of each session. If you've been in this game for more then 3 months, then you already know more than anything someone will teach you in a session.

See that's the problem, I'm not quite sure you could really offer anything. Who's going to up on stage and start spewing some really good hard hitting information that could make you some hard bank?

Probably no one. You really do get the best info from talking to other marketers, and when there's a little booze involved you end up with some nice tid bits of info.

If I did have constructive info for you though, last year in Boston the meet market was in way too small of a room in way too small of an area. We had a bunch WF members all standing in a crowded hallway. It'd be cool to have one big room for the meet market and another big ass room that could be split up for meet ups.

Lots of wickedfire people like to say the sessions are useless at Affiliate Summit. You now have the organizer of the event asking for constructive criticism about what YOU would like to see. Rather then complaining, now's your chance, share what you want to see! I bet you Shawn is willing to listen.

Thanks - the room was initially plenty big, but we got more demand than expected for tables, so we had to make it tighter.

We're going to have meeting areas with tables in NYC this summer.

I'm glad to hear any complaints - that's helpful for changing things up for each show.

But specific topics are definitely a help.

If somebody has an idea for some interactive session or whatever, I'd love to hear it.

We can't make it happen for NYC, because all of the space is maxed out, but we are totally open for Vegas next Jan.
