I want to sponsor a child in someone else's name as a Christmas gift, but I'm afraid that all of these programs are scams. I'm hoping that the scam geniuses of WF can point me towards something that's legit.

Btw, all of my other Christmas gift purchases were snuggies and dog snuggies.

do it in a practical way, go down to walmart and pay off some parents lay away, not the one with video games and crap, the one that's a winter coat and a pair of shoes..

We sponsor a kid through Sponsor a Child - Compassion International. We use to have World Vision but felt like they tried to up sell us every month wayyyy to hard.

There is a charity comparison web site and both World Vision and Compassion have a similar very large percentage of the funds that actually end up helping versus administration.

Not quite sponsoring a kid, but you could check out Vittana. Sponsoring the kids education only...

Alternatively Kiva would be a good bet.

Be patriotic => Help your fellow citizens, poor American families; poor American kids.

NO need to get all patriotic about this.

Helping locally is easier, you will have less friction, and lost $$$ due to admin issues, etc...

Say no to the exploitation of african children. Those NGOs are the biggest scams out there.
