Amazing Nicholas Alkemade Survived a 18000 Fall

Given the hundreds of Allied airmen getting shot down over Germany every single day of that war, it was bound to happen once.

How is something like this possible?

But his fall was broken by pine trees and a soft snow cover on the ground.

LOL reading can be fun sometimes.

On an unrelated note, OP and the guy beneath him (tainted) both have the same post count at 722. Conspiracy! (or witchcraft)

The concept of terminal velocity. Once you reach terminal velocity it doesn't matter if you're falling 500 feet or 17000 feet, you're still falling at the same speed. Anything that can stop your fall will save your life.

A German lady in the 70's was the sole survivor of a flight that broke up in mid air in Columbia?, and after that... hiked through the jungle for 10 days before being found. Now THAT is a double whammy.

She also recalled finding rows of passengers, still strapped in the seats, head first, 3 feet into the ground... yikes.

Spot on the money. Terminal velocity of a falling person is around 120mph if you are in the regular sky diving arched position. Go through some tree covering and land in a big pile of snow and I could easily see someone scrubbing off 60mph before impact.
