America's Dirtiest Hotel? The Grand Prize Goes to...
Grand Resort Hotel & Convention Center in Pigeon Forge, Tenn.

...the (evidently not-so) Grand Resort Hotel & Convention Center in singer Dolly Parton's old stomping grounds of Pigeon Forge, Tenn.
The Grand Hotel in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. wears the tarnished crown of Dirtiest Hotel in the U.S., based in cleanliness ratings by TripAdvisor travelers. The survey is in its sixth year.
The Smoky Mountains hotel tops TripAdvisor's sixth annual list of the 10 dirtiest hotels in the U.S., based on travelers' cleanliness ratings posted to the popular review site.

The Grand earned thumbs down from 87% of more than 200 reviewers - including "JordynC," whose scathing critique of a stay earlier this month ("chewing tobacco spit oozing down the hall;" "carpeting so greasy and dirty you wouldn't want to sit your luggage down") ended with "the best thing thing that could happen is that a meteor fall from the sky and reduce it to rubble."

Spokeswoman Courtney Keck says the bestowal of TripAdvisor's smudged crown has been "a startling and unsettling issue that the company is taking very seriously, (and) the Grand Resort Hotel Group has already begun taking the steps necessary to restore this once great property." A new CEO took over the hotel in December, and he has replaced the general manager and heads of housekeeping and maintenance, she adds. Also new: "a different sanitizer and cleaning product."

Other properties on this year's dirty line-up:
2. Jack London Inn, Oakland, Calif.
3. Desert Inn Resort, Daytona Beach, Fla.
4. Hotel Carter, New York, N.Y. (The infamous Carter, where I spent the night two years ago, returns this year after a short-lived hiatus. It was crowned "dirtiest hotel" in 2009, and the former Times Square tenement has been on TripAdvisor's list five times in six years.)
5. Polynesian Beach & Golf Resort, Myrtle Beach, S.C.
6. Atlantic Beach Hotel, Miami Beach, Fla.
7. Rodeway Inn, Williamsville, N.Y.
8. Super 8 Estes Park, Denver, Colo.
9. Palm Grove Hotel and Suites, Virginia Beach, Va.
10. Econo Lodge Newark International Airport, Elizabeth, N.J.

TripAdvisor's annual rundown of "grime scenes" generates plenty of publicity - and controversy. Last year, notes London's Independent, British hoteliers "reacted with fury, claiming their businesses were damaged, after being included in a list of the 10 'Dirtiest Hotels' in the UK.

So what's the dirtiest hotel/motel you have stayed at?

-=Chipmunk=-

I once stayed at a motel in Nebraska (can't remember the name) where you could see little specks jumping up from the carpet (fleas?), multiple stains on the floor and bedding, dead insects in the ceiling lamps, etc. Was the worst stay ever.

But you stayed? No bugs in your car probably :)

One time we went camping and it started raining so damn hard the tent was floating. Threw the crap in the truck and found the ONLY hotel for many miles.

The tv in our room actually had what looked like a gunshot hole in it. The bed had cinder blocks to replace a missing leg, and it went down hill from there :)

Once I stayed in days inn brookpark cleveland, ohio. Later I found out it was picked as dirtiest hotel (maybe year +-2008) . But it was not that bad... So I am skeptical about these nominations.

I think the dirtiest place I stayed at was at a timeshare resort up in Orlando about 4 years ago...

Blood stains on the sheets and bugs flying around the room. Pretty nasty!

Wow, I'm actually not surprised. Two Spring Break's ago, my girlfriend and I actually stayed at the Grand in Pigeon Forge. The consequences of trying to save a few dozen bucks with Hotwire, apparently the Grand is a two and a half star.

There were quite a few large bugs, the floors squished mildly with every step, the whole place smelled like smoke, there were stains on the walls, and every room smelled like a body was decomposing underneath the mattresses. No joke.

The place was horrible. After the first two nights, we forfeited the third night and ended up staying at the Creekstone Inn, which was just as sketchy. The "balconies overlooking the river" were batting cages overlooking dead ducks and an RV park. The continental breakfast was cereal and two-day old doughnuts in an emptied out guest room, and the front desk was across a two-lane highway from the hotel itself.

In my opinion, Pigeon Forge is the Myrtle Beach of the inland Southeast (where rednecks go to vacation). Stay completely out of that area, as well as Sevierville. The only place worth visiting is the nearby Gatlinburg, but even that place is a wasteland 9 months of the year.

I've also been to the Desert Inn Resort in Daytona. Place was nasty. It was last summer, I was vacationing with my parents, sister, and girlfriend, and it started pouring on the beach at night, so we ran into this place as it was closest. The stench, plus the sandy, wet carpet, made us run back out into the rain. We walked in the rain all the way back to the Inn on the Beach, where we were staying.

There are some truly crappy hotels out there.

I was just in gatlinberg, and we ventured over to pigeon forge.

Both towns seemed like they tried to be las vegas/myrtle beach. Like 8 ripley's believe it or not in a 1 mile radius and that kinda stuff.

If you go to Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg stay in Gatlinburg at the Park Place condos. It's literally at the entrance to the park. The fairfiled on the river used to be pretty nice, but it was a while since we stayed there. Avoid the Ramada, we almost stayed there, but the room looked like it hadn't been cleaned and we left.

Eat at Bennetts.

We went to a great brewery for dinner in Gatlinberg. They made a really good steak. We stayed at Zoder's in which is branded as Best Western. It was really nice. You had a fire place and they gave you wood and a starer log everything. Racquetball and some other cool stuff. I'd reccomend it.

I gotta say. Gatlinberg was the shittiest vacation ever. Nothing to do.

The fairfield had a balcony over the river, fireplace (gas) and large jaquzi tub.

I like it because it's close to the park.

I stayed at this motel near El Paso, TX and when I walked in there was a family of cockroaches, all on their backs and fighting to get up straight lol. So my homies and I got some 40's and bailed out to the drive through liquor store next door to kill some time.

Later that night, I come back all buzzed up and decide I have to take a shit, so I lay down a steamer that has been nagging at me. But then it doesn't flush strong enough and consequently clogs. Fuck lol. So we avoid the bathroom and just crash out. Next morning I go to take a shower and the head only drips water - not nearly enough to wash the shampoo out my hair :ticking:

Pigeon Forge is great if you like gokarts. That and Bennetts Barbecue are the best attractions. I think the Old Mill Restaurant is supposed to be pretty good but its been years since I've eaten there.

Myrtle Beach isn't that bad imo

First night in po-dunk Iowa where the AF sent me for a couple years was the worst hotel I've ever stayed in. Room smelled like someone had died in it and they had tried to cover up the smell by burning cheap cigars on the floor. Sadly it was quite literally the only room left in town and I had too much junk in my car to sleep in it. Thank God a room opened up at a nicer place the next day.

Speaking of gatlinburg - if ya'll ever go don't stay in a stupid hotel. There are a million sweet cabins on the mountain to rent. Me, my GF and a couple others stayed in this place back in the summer. http://www.flipkey.com/gatlinburg-vacation-rentals/p24623/ awesome view from the hot tub and there were enough trees around the house to where it was like nobody else was around.

I have stayed in a few sketchy places. In Bartlesville Oklahoma, I stayed at a place that was signed as a BestWestern, but when I got there, I found that Best Western had pulled their name from the place.
The swimming pool was green and reeked, The room a/c unit barely worked and the TV looked like something from the sixties. I had to wedge a book of matches in the channel knob to get it to stay on the station. The whole place smelled of urine unless you were near the manager's apartment that smelled of curry.
I stayed at a place in Manhattan Kansas, there was something going on like graduation that weekend, and pretty much every hotel was booked.
I found a place, and the clerk warned me not to leave anything on the floor since rain was in the forecast. When I asked why, he told me that if we get much rain, then the rooms have running water. Anyway, I woke at 5am or so, and it was raining like a mother, stepped out of the bed to hit the bathroom and realized I was standing in 6 inches of water. True to his words, water was pouring in the front door, and running out the back of the unit.

I have also been to that Desert Inn in Daytona Beach. We walked in, and looked around, and walked right back out and drove till we found a better place.

One year for spring break, my buddy and I (with our girlfriends) rented some beachside condo in panama city beach, FL. The entire place smelled like cum. I shit you not, the couches, countertops, beds, chairs, you name it... just reeked like they held a 50 person bukkake film in the place and didnt bother to clean up. Also, within 2 hours of checkng in we had cops at our door looking for a murder suspect, another hour or two later there was a crazy brawl outside where some dude got hit in the head with a 2x4 with rusted nails on the end... left a trail of blood starting from the community beach shower all the way up the alleyway to the street. Checked out the next morning, got our monies back.
