Is this just something that you have to think of? Or are there any particular categories that are low niches? Or is it based on searching Google and seeing where there is low volume/cost? What # of searches would be considered low/high volume?

Can anybody provide an example of a low competition niche without giving out a secret? Or any advise/ideas on where to look or concentrate on for low competition niches?

I'd say use overture and find a keyword with different searches then running it through search on Google and see how many results it returns. Take the sites on the first page and run them through backlink scanning sites and check their PR, if those numbers are low and you think you could catch up go for it.

Sometimes don't think... just act

EDIT: and just for the record your advice wasn't half bad.

I simply find a popular niche and then find a sub niche within it that could possibly turn a profit for me even if just for the short term. Maybe my tactics are just not as complex most peoples.

Low competition typically means low profits. Not always, but 95% of the time. Don't be afraid to compete. Typically at least half of the people in competitive niches have no clue and you can easily take their piece of the pie.
