Well, I'm looking to learn how to really play poker, not just bullshit games, but real strategy and competitive play. I have been playing a lot on pokerstars.net but as far as books, resources, etc. does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks.

Rarely play anymore. You could peruse PokerForums.org - lots of existing threads that you can read for new players, etc.

If you're playing at .net, you're playing with play money. That's the worst thing you can do. If you want to learn, you have to play with real money, even if it's only $0.01/$0.02 tables.

Man I sure miss playing online, even though it infuriated me to no end.

There are plenty of great books out there. Just hit up amazon and find the ones with the best ratings. Brunson's books are the bible of poker.

When starting out playing poker I found Two Plus Two Publishing very friendly with tons of info and advice. Lots of professional poker players and writers hang out on the forums too.

For books you could try Winning Low Limit Holdem by Lee Jones and Getting Started in Holdem by Ed Miller. Very good primers for learning how to play Holdem.

I currently play at and affiliate for Absolute Poker as they are still accepting US players. Working on my no limit skills playing the SNG's, and currently I've been in the money 14 of the last 17 I've played, and a few of the tournament freerolls I've made it into the top 50 out of 2000.

Yeah, I consider myself a serious player. Play at least once a day :)
A good book for newbies is Tournament poker Vol. 1 by Dan Harrington. I like to play tournaments and SnG. I suck at heads up :P Oh yeah, I play only no limit and 7stud.

I throw huge poker parties at my house every other friday but i suck and always loose. If you find any good resources let me know cus i need to start learning to be good. I loose way too much money.

Here's me the ONE time i actually won!

What helped me a lot is watch poker on TV. I watch WSOP 2005 and 2006 (ESPN), World Poker Tour (Travel) and Professional Poker Tour (Travel).

You learn a lot by watching pros how they certain hands.

Actually, the influx of bad poker players online is thanks to online television. You're seeing hours and hours of play condensed into an hour or two of television where only interesting hands are shown...

Watching poker on TV should only be done for the recreation of watching the players talk and such.. you have no idea what they're really doing unless you watch them play every single hand throughout the tournament.

The best, IMHO, way to learn is to 1. Play online a lot 2. Visit forums like 2+2 and PokerForums.org to ask questions and read tips, 3. Read a few books and learn more of the finer details.

The most important thing is just to play a LOT... and I heavily advise against trying to learn anything by watching poker on TV because if you learn anything, it will be bad plays.

I'd have to agree with Tyler completely. I play a lot and you get a lot of experience from that then I post hands that I have questions about on different forums and it has done wonders for my game. I'm not quite balla like Tyler but I'm currently playing about 30-40 hours a month and making between 1500-2500 a month. There are a lot of donks out there even still and I'm know Phil Ivey.

Chicago

P.S. Final tabled two 180 mans last night, but I'm mostly a 50 and 100 NL player

I play atleast a couple hours every single day. I love Poker, all games - but I mainly play hold em'.

I play on Bodog, they have a lot of cool free tournaments where you can win real money, they have the best deposit bonuses, and I just like their program.

If anyone else plays on Bodog and would like to play sometime shoot me a PM.

The best way to get better is to just play, the more hands you see the more you'll be able to make the right decisions in that situation in the future.

I'd also recommend finding a live tournament at a local casino if you can. Real people face to face is a lot different and more difficult than online. Online, you can pick your nose, twirl your hair, whatever. Tells are almost non existant. But live, you have to really be aware of your surroundings, other players, etc. It'll make you a better online player.

I used to play at TruePoker, PartyPoker, UltimateBet, and one other that I can't remember. Usually my username is IronCannibal.

/edit/ just signed up with Bodog. Playing right now as IronCannibal at table 2182

I disagree with the TV thing, it helped me a lot. Yeah you only get to see the interesting hands, but you can learn from that too. If it hadn't been for those shows, I would have been broke many times, going all in too often :P

Thanks, I'll look into the books, and websites mentioned.

The problem with me playing online for money or at brick and mortar casinos - I'm underage. That will soon change when I turn 18 in a few months and will be able to play online, but I think many brick and mortar casinos require you to be 21 to play, though I think to play at some of the Indian Casinos 18 is OK, and in Canada its 19.

If you're good with Math, Dan Harrington's book is really good. It gets into a bit of probability and calculating all sorts of different odds in your head, but definately a good read and gives you a lot of things to think about.

Its pretty simple to win a game of poker when your the only one at the table.. or exceedingly difficult depending on how you look at it!

That sounds good, I've had some experience with probability and gaming with scrabble.
