Even after speaking with a few lawyers and one that does immigration internationally, I can't seem to get clear answers out of the pros, so hoping some here might already be doing this:

My sitution:

*In Canada
*Sole Prop
*Want to move somewhere hot and do 6 months here/there

^That's the short of it, seems easy right? i.e. with the dollar almost even again, and the states eco still shite, I am looking at buying a home in vegas or cali flat out - no mortgage, to live in during the cold months here.

*Again sounds easy right? I have the cash, I have the will, so I start looking into it a bit deeper recently, and here are the road blocks.

*You can't 'work' in the states as a visitor (obviously), but this actually includes telecommuting to a Canadian job, even if it's looking after my own CO. online... I'm guessing if I get an internet connection and simply do some emails and or some phone calls back here to my VA's, it's considered work. Would they actually monitor my shit? Could I just get a wireless international provider for my lappy and 'hide' the small bits of communication or heaven forbid I upload/edit a site quickly from an internet cafe?

Res/operation: I don't want to go through the hassle of opening up LLC's and doing international taxes twice/understanding tax treaties, etc. just for the sake of being able to turn on my machine and check stats/do some quick work.

There's a ton of Visa's to apply for when trying to get citizenship or temporary stay, OR you get married as your in... but to date I haven't seen any incentive for business owners/intl property investors, or any perk other than the cheap prices. I don't plan on renting, I don't plan on making money off the property (maybe if/when I sell, but primary reason is to actually live in it). Then upon even further inspection, I find I can easily simply be turned around/denied at the border (i guess that's anywhere though).

I checked a few other spots including Panama and Philipines so far - with panama you can stay there for 6 months, jump the border for 3 days to costa rica, then come back to panama for another 6 months/repeat (though I wouldn't - I want to remain a Canadian citizen and you lose your health care/ohip once you're out of the province/country for more than six). Even there it seems visa's are more often than not the popular route.

Most other people's scenario's include complex shit i.e. mortgages/renting/jobs/banks, or opening up shop in said country, etc., I'm merely looking to buy and live there for 6 months a year.

Is anyone here currently doing this or have any insight even if you didn't start in Canada or end up in the US? I have a few sites for resources, but none come close to these types of questions. Not even sure who I'd phone on the govt level to ask this shit if immigration lawyers haven't helped.

Thanks and sorry for the long read, hopefully this will help others in my shoes too..
NC.

Why not try somewhere like Argentina? You can buy a decent 1br apartment in Buenos Aires for ~50k. If you don't wanna buy, same deal you get a 90 day visa, hop over to Uruguay and back for another 90 days.

Easy to find shit (see craigslist), fast internet, etc etc

A decent apartment to yourself will probably run about $600 a month

I wouldn't wanna spend 6 months in panama :)

I wouldn't worry about running your own business online when in the States. "Not working" effectively means getting a job there. They are not going to monitor your internet activities, lol.... unless you're on some kind of watch list; in which case I doubt you'd get across the border in the first place.

This. If you're really worried, get a membership to some VPN or something.

I've been diving into info like MAD over the last few days.

Here is my findings, I think this will help you guys in the states too.

**FUCK buying property in the US as an investment as a foreigner, there is absolutely no incentive and the green card/borders/visas/working remotely/etc. is an absolute nightmare... I know they probably won't check on me but I don't want to be living in the states being nervous for x months a year, never really getting or wanting to gain citizenship. So end of the day, I just want palm trees, oceans, and cheap cost of life.

So this brought me to: Living Abroad - Canuck Abroad <Not bad for Canadians to read...

Thinking further, I start to get an itch for Panama or DomRep as the tax privelages and incentives for property investors are through the rooooof! Posted this on my forum and got this info as feedback from one of my members:

Howdy all - yeah - Norb we looked into moving a couple of years ago... but with kids in tow.. not possible - have to worry about medical and trying to home-school. Although, I await their university years when they come home, knock on the door to find we've moved.... 8)

Anyhow, this site: Living Overseas - International Real Estate, Overseas Jobs - Asset Protection - Expatriate Resources - Overseas Retirement has a ton of info. There is also a teaching group called ALC that hires a lot of English speaking talky types. I do know they have openings for Internet instructors in some parts - Morocco mostly - so, while you can claim an income with this group or one like it where you teach an hour a week - it keeps you in the country as a teacher.

As for where we were looking to move - this is where you want to telecommute from: Real Estate In Turks and Caicos

Here is another good link about property all over the world: International Real Estate For Sale Listed By Nation

Good luck with your search.
Kept searching and reading that site above - awesome fucking resource!

Now thinking, screw 6 months/6 months just to retain my citizenship and health care. I'm young, lot's can happen in the future. I'm being fucking taxed 40% and could have been a millionaire by now if I had gone to Panama/DomRep/Belize etc. 5+ years ago. I have a few contacts that simply travel the world while IM'ing remotely, and they keep telling me to do it so I think I'm going to divert the plan above to simply go to tax-free mode within the next year.

I keep searching and stumble upon: Panama Incorporation, Offshore Incorporation Services: Forming Or Incorporating A Small Business In a Tax Beneficial Jurisdiction After reading this and like 10 of his other articles, I decided to just call the guy. Got off the phone with him like 10 minutes ago (AWESOME GUY - call him and tell him you just spoke with Norb, and you're in the same boat - he has both Canadian and US clients that are IM/M'ers doing the big move all the time, was surprised). Guys CO does everything from getting you citizenship, to setting up your foundation/inc, to bank intro's, etc... Not kissing his ass but really good resource for those stuck with lot's of questions and 'what if's' floating around in their heads. He answered everything, even shit regarding regaining citizenship later/health care stuff...

Couple cool things I learned:

*You can have dual citizenship in DomRep, Panama is grey with it?
*You can apply for quick citizenship in DomRep, buy property in DomRep, but have your whole biz setup in Panama and be 100% tax free.
*Canadians can somehow claim non-citizenship on business taxes while having dual citizenship? Might not have gotten that 100%
*Drug and Criminal/background checks are done for citizenship, including thc mofo! I'm going on a diet as of yesterday :(
*DomRep RE is nicer/cheaper than Panama (Really nice beachfronts for 250k in domrep!).
*Panama is LITERALLY a playground for onilne biz - http://www.businesspanama.com/investing/opportunities/ecommerce.php

**I'M A FUCKING RETARD FOR NOT DOING THIS YEARS AGO! As I posted on my forum - 'Wonder how many business owners are travelling the world 'lol'ing' at us keeping 100% of their monies...' < Also the avg simple savings accounts there make you like 10 points, and that's tax free again.

Conclusion: I'm gtfo of Canada before next snowfall, and setting up shop/looking at RE asap.

/Mouthfull.

Punta Cana has the best beaches I've ever seen, and I've traveled a lot. There's a slight malaria risk in DR; but either keep some Malarone around and take a curative dose if you suddenly get high fever and chills, or get to a hospital asap. No worth taking daily malaria pills if you actually live there... then again, I'm no doctor.

Panama has endemic Leishmaniasis http://www.panama-guide.com/article.php/20060527204351427
so watch for those sandflies.

40% of your monies, still gone... get an LT/other creative tax shelter, you might get high teens if you're lucky and a big baller to make it worth it.

Or you set up shop and citizenship there, travel/rent/buy a place there or anywhere I choose, once there.

Bottom line is, the sooner I/you start diverting your income to your panama/domrep/belize/etc. account, the sooner your govt stops taking xx%. If that means you lose citizenship or half to walk a fine line with dual and split earnings, so be it. The world isn't that big and you aren't tied to panama or wherever you decide to go for life. You can still travel/live/visit US or Canada... I guess IRS/CanRev is obviously going to wonder why your business died or you closed it, but by then you should have your shit/plan in process, and then you can tell them "because you tax the shit out of me and I just want to live a good life, keep my foreign income tax free and secure, kthxbye".

I don't have much holding me here in Tdot, small family, friends are all zombies stuck in crapola jobs/familes and married to the system for life now so not much motivation left to stay in this cold ass province/country, and tons of reasons to go, above and beyond keeping that extra 40%. I believe you can visit (Back to Canada once you're a DomRep or Pan citizen) for 90 days/year too, that's 3 months of nice summer in Canada, the rest wherever, money stays at home in domrep/panama and grows/compounds/yumm.

I've been living tax free for the last 3 years traveling the world. You bring up citizenship alot, which is not a requirement to live somewhere, you don't even have to be a resident(in most of latin america money talks and you can overstay visas for a small fee). And i dont know if you've been to places your talking about(Panama, Dominican Republic etc), and you'd probably want to visit them first before you consider these places further. I wouldn't want to live in either of those places.

PM me if you want to talk more, theres alot of stuff i'd rather not mention on a forum

It would be nice to be a snowbird with the freedom of being a internet marketer.. I would not do it as an investment.. it is more a life style I will enjoy

as for the health issue.. why not bring some chlorine tablet or have solar water system installed on premise...

be careful with St. Kitts. several reports of people buying into their citizenship program one year, and getting 'denied' with frivolous reasons when time comes to renew.

other than that, way to go mate. i've heard the name Ascot a few times though i haven't been on the low with them.

/envy...............

where i live, "not working" equals forced welfare OR being dead. since realistically you shouldn't be able to buy food without work [which =income which =taxes]. if neither is the case, they just assume you're evading taxes and bring hell down on you with a 5-figure ransom until you prove how you've survived the past 3~6 months =/

living in with somebody or otherwise not having a registered home address is no resource either......... they place newspaper ads and pictures motivating people to rat you out lol.

this happens to people earning $10k as much as people earning $100k.... let alone $1m+ -_-

you guys should be thankful your irs doesn't practice a proactive policy:smilie_weihn_winki:real talk!

sounds like somebodies got a case of the mooondaysss

but yah i hear you... i've had these exact thoughts as well...i would take an extended trip first, just to taste out the waters...keep us updated! Oh and if you need a butler, holla yo.

I've done a bit of research on panama, it does seem like a great place to take your business. Not to mention the largest FTZ in the americas, 2nd in the world, maybe a great place to make a second business as well :)

Where you go to live does not have to be where your business is...

If you work online your bank accounts can be on the otherside of the world, you don't need to be a citizen or a resident to have bank accounts in foreign countries.
