i use it on occasion when i need help falling asleep, of if i just pulled an all-nighter and need restful daytime sleep. our bodies produce melatonin naturally, and one of the triggers is light levels, so trying to fall asleep is more difficult when the sun is out, hence the need for melatonin. i usually get drowsy after about 20-30 mins. it works, but try to use it only when necessary. i've read that prolonged use is not recommended.

I use it prett regularly. Almost every night. Use the sublingual stuff (dissolves under yer tongue)...it gave me nightmares the first week I took it. I think that's pretty rare though.

Yes and it does work. I also gave it to a stoner friend of mine who could never sleep. He now swears by it.

I have a pretty physical job, I'm a professional golf caddie, so no need for drugs for me.

Which makes me thing, fucking work out a little.

I've taken melatonin and it does work but as far as I know it's not really a sleep inducer as much as it is a sleep enhancer...

Back in the day when I did a little research on it I remember reading that it's supposed to induce, enhance and prolong REM sleep which is the portion of sleep when you dream. REM stands for rapid eye movement... Basically melatonin helps you fall into a deeper sleep.

I don't use melatonin anymore because you need 6-8 hours of sleep if you're going to use it... if you sleep any less then that you wake up groggy as hell. I know I did...

Actually no. Melatonin just helps you fall asleep, it won't help you STAY asleep. For that you should take something like L-Tryptophan

I've used it off and on for about 6 years. Not regularly, but anytime my sleep schedule gets too seriously fucked, I'll use it for 3-5 days. I've found it invaluable in getting my circadian rhythms back in whack.

Quality sleep is an indication of balance within the body.

Sleep aids work in different ways, sometimes combinations prove best.

I have found that while melatonin is good for falling asleep it often lingers the next morning, especially if you have nochieve a sleep duration of 7-8 hours.

If falling asleep is difficult, a combination of daytime excersize and a natural sleep aid can help set in motion an effective sleep pattern.

Three items I have found very useful for dealing with sleep problems:

Magnesium: Often over looked this relatively cheap vitamin is an amazing muscle relaxant, also critical for neromuscluar function.
5HTP or 5 Hydroxy Trypophan is a Seratonin precurser. Seratonin is a critical neurotransmitter chemical that is responsible for mood, sleep function, motor controls, cognitive thought processes - can be low due to lack of sleep, poor diet, lack of sunlight, and not excersizing enough. Healthy lifestyle = abundance of this in the brain.
Melatonin - Hormone that helps initiate sleep, sedative effect and often give the Melatonin hangover, try 3mg to start and work your way up, combine with 5htp for deeper sleep.
Chamomile Tea - Age old sleep aid, the tea is great. Can also use the tea bags for bringing down inflammation on skin as chamimile has anti inflammatory characteristics.
Valerian Root - Herbal based Sedative. Wonderfully potent. Once again don't over do it.

My back ground is a lifestyle/nutritional consultant.

I am always available to answer questions from affilaites or otherwise as it's my true calling, though affilaite management and marketing is a lot of fun!!!!!!! ;)

Anyways hope that helped: I left the sleep aids behind after I changed my eating habits and started body building. I sleep deeper than ever!

Next time you're at GNC check out SleepFast .. I"ve been using this for maybe 2 months when I need it, it's amazing - time released and kicks in ~15 minutes.

that thing doesn't work for me at all, Tylenol simply sleep didn't work either
