Just curious as what you think about huge domain purchases and if any of you have done it?

It sucks but it's kind of a must for me to do it.

Can you tell us the domain, are you locked into some kind of agreement where its secure for your purchase so you can tell? I'd ask around.. 100K is a lot for a domain, it has to have serious market value and you need a plan for a clear path to revenue, do you have it all lined up?

Most I've ever spent on a domain was 3K I believe...

You are prepared to spend that much on a fucking domain?

Take a time out and think, really think before you do it. I'm sure you can get it for a lot less.

Just my thinking.

Domains are like prime real estate, they will always go up if the name or phrase is right. For $100k im figuring it is a pretty damn good domain, either with an incredible amount of type in traffic or is already branded.

it has to be a a real category killer like body.com with typin traffic or a LL.com . Would like to point out some sample domains to know wat to expect for that much money.

French.com

Shows.com

Keyboard.com

Wife.com

Use a professional third party for security.

The most I've personally spent on a domain was $5,000 (twice) with a couple at $2k.

The most I've spent on behalf of a client was $12,000, negotiated down from the original asking price of $34.5k.

I previously sold two poker domains for $8k and £11k.

$100k for a domain name is a significant figure, but certainly not unusual. I would expect a a fairly decent premium key word or phrase for that amount but the best premium names are going from half a million to several million.

A lot of times the big million dollar sales are largely for a % stake in the business they are going to develop on the name or stock in the company that bought the name.

Like with beer.com the kid sold 80% of the domain for $80,000 or something like that so when it sold for 1-2 million he got 20% of that profit.

Deals like that suck. 100% ownership thank you very much.

Obviously use an escrow service of sorts. I usually use escrow.com or Moniker.com.

Decided whether or not you think it's beneficial to you to report the sale. It will get some play in the news and online, but if you want to roll under the radar get a NDA and do no use Moniker. Moniker will want to report the sale as going through them. They won't if you ask them not to, but even though they won't report it the owner of Moniker is an entrepreneur and so are all his friends and who knows what info is shared in private.

Are you paying all $100k up front? You can usually get some sort of financing going if you need the cash flow for the site.

Protect the shit out of the domain. Don't have it moved to a registrar that blows balls. I'd keep the domain in it's own account with ridiculous passwords and usernames not used anywhere else online.

Make sure the domain is not stolen.

Make sure the domain is not stolen.

Recheck the stolen status of the domain.

Yes, and that includes both writing and calling the whois listed person/company. Make damn sure the real owner is selling.

But to answer your question, no, most i've spent was around the 15k mark.

Sorry for the delay in my response. I can't list the domain yet but I don't think we'll get it for anything less then $160K. The thing is, I own the reciprocal domain which was purchased in 2001 for 5K. The main thing is that it would increase my business by over 600% within a couple months (because of branding purposes).

and....

yes, I already have a revenue path in place.

yes, the domain holds SEO value and traffic (Traffic is only 3K a month but the PPC value is $10-$20 a click). However, it holds more value for branding purposes.

I am not worried about the domain being stolen, fraudulent, etc, in any way. I know the owner of the domain and that is not a possibility.

I was just curious if you guys have spent large dollars for domains. I own over 50 domains in the 10K+ range but have never spent more then 10K for them in the past (most were purchased in 01-04). Just a little nervous about spending that kind of cash for a domain without having the revenue to pay for it on it's own (within this niche).

yes i have made some deals as a middleman/broker use escrow.com

Do it for small businesses a great domain name is instant credibility.

I passed on a domain for 50K, the owner is now kicking ass on the term @ 3rd beating wikipedia already with almost no seo.

No offense but if you really do own 50 domain properties worth 10k or more why have not paid for a professional valuation study? And who spends that kind of money on "branding"?

Individuals who do well in domain investing view domain assets more like convertible securities - i.e. an equity asset subject to appreciation with a significant fixed income component (i.e. revenues).

What is the discount rate you are using in your valuation model?

What comparables are you looking at?

Have you calculated a paypack period?

Gone are the days when this very simple concept of "a domain is worth whatever you will pay for it" still flies.

If you've run the numbers and considering how the market is these days, you should feel quite comfortable with spending 6 figures if the domain is worth at least that or more - IMHO
