I need someone who can design and develop a magento site. They will be responsible for creating the whole site from scratch and making sure the whole thing works properly. I do not need them to add the products, as I will do that myself. I'm looking to spend no more than $700-800 for this project.

If you know anyone or have used someone in the past that you would recommend, let me know

That's a really low budget for a western developer to take on such a project. You might find an Indian or Filipino to do the work for that amount but don't count on being happy with the results.

This is correct. Up the budget man.

Whats a more appropriate budget?

I'd charge you that much just to install the product on a host. Add a zero to the end of that budget.

If your going cheap I'd pass on Magento and just go with bigcommerce..

^^^ What he said. Magento site development, from design to deployment, typically runs mid 4 figures and higher. Quotes I received from two dev teams that came highly recommended to me were $6k each and I had already produced the design and HTML templates for them to convert myself.

I decided to go cheap and went through 6 different cheap programmers, some from overseas, and some from the States. With the exception of a Russian, a 7th guy who did great work but who also charged $50 an hour, it was a colossal waste of time and money and I should have just gone with one of the $6k quotes to begin with.

Magento is a bitch and it takes someone who really knows what they are doing to get it right. Most of the Indians and other Asians I tried working with knew sweet fuck all about customizing it to my needs and produced work that wasn't upgradeable (they modified core files) and other shit like that.

Buyer beware! Good luck.

Thanks for all of this. I will definitely take all of this into consideration. Maybe i'm gonna have to shell out the $5K+ Do you remember the dev teams that were recommended to you?

I'd recommend going with a hosted solution, like BigCommerce, CoreCommerce, etc. if budget is an issue.

If you can add a zero to that budget my team can build you one of the most well designed Magento site with products loaded and all the changes you want. Budget is key, only PM me if your willing to add a zero to it.

how can you talk about budget with very vague requests.
i have no idea what you want in your site, what it should do....database etc etc

Of course he'll need to provide an accurate brief to whoever he hires to do the work but it's a pretty good assumption that, since he wants a site built using Magento, that he's going to be running an ecommerce store. If you can wrap your head around that concept then it's not much of a stretch to imagine what that might entail and how much work is involved, especially if you have previous experience with Magento.

BTW, is your shift key broken?

+1

This project has already failed before it's started. Nobody picks a platform beforehand without determining the business requirements and actually succeeds. Write solid list of requirements you want end to end, eg. "I want product items to support multiple attributes with inventory control", "I want real-time UPS shipping", "I need to support drop shipments". Factor in design, hosting, maintenance, etc. for on-going costs.

Then submit it to a dozen small shops for bid.

If you want a better idea of budget, contact Aheadworks... They're the best Magento developers I know, they're absolutely fantastic but you might end up finding that your budget was way out!

Either way, it's aheadworks.com and I'm sure they'll help you out. I used to deal with someone called 'Pavel'.

Many thanks,
Lewis

I'm just looking for a recommendation for someone who's good at working with magento. I can then work with that person and tell them the kind of things I need. This project hasn't failed, it's just in the beginning stages.

I know the things I want on the the site, but it's hard to explain without publicly posting my idea for the whole site.

If you're interested, PM me and I'll put you in touch with the Magento devs I've used.

As mentioned above, you def need to spend 5k+ for a good magento site.

A way to minimize your costs is to use an existing theme.
If you need to stay under 2k, def use shopify/bigcommerce/volusion/or w/e

A great design shop that I work with from time to time with their own custom plugins - Business eCommerce Web Design Company | Magento Development, Developer, Designers

They will charge about 7-10k for a nice custom magento site but you can be guaranteed you will be happy with your product.

I have yet to talk to a non-developer that bootstrapped their ecommerce site that doesn't wish they spent a lot more $$ on a quality site the first time around.
