Not sure what their deal is... Media Temple's Grid Server keeps going down like 4-5x a month, (At least when I've caught it).. I'm sure it's even worse than that, haven't really used a tool to track it.. Usually what will happen is my sites will go totally offline for 5-10 min, then slowly come back online, and then be back to normal...

I understand it's ($20*/month) shared hosting but this really does suck.. I remember when people talked about the Grid being horrible years ago, however I thought Media Temple had fixed all of this? ... Or perhaps they just did a damn good job at reputation management, because I can't seem to find anyone else complaining?

I like their support, interface, etc, but it doesn't mean anything if my sites aren't online.. So I'm starting to think the Grid is a bad idea.. Might just hop over to a dedicated server, but curious to see if anyone else dealing with this?

Oh god. I just recommended Media Temple Grid to a client... i might look like a fool now.

"yeah, they host Adobe.com. Its really good."

I've never been much of a fan of mediatemple, we used to use them for all of our client at my old dev shop and I hated it. Such slow servers, downtime sucks, blah. Good news is, if you complain to them they might hook you up with coupons and shit.

Since not a lot of other folks seem to be complaining, it could easily be a site-specific/server specific issue or could be a packet drop amidst a node between your ISP and mt.

The next time the site is inaccessible, run a traceroute from your PC to your site and log it.

Setup a bunch of monitoring utilities to monitor your sites uptime on a separate email account (these can get spammy as fuck).

Also, do you have server specific queries that run occassionally? Chron jobs etc. ? Are you getting spammed a lot? Have you contacted their support relating this situation?

Hmm.. Did a Pingdom test, and like 5-6 other online website checking tools and they all indicated the sites were entirely offline, and like 28 second load times once the server was coming back online..

One guy at Media Temple told me to try a traceroute, but I have no idea what that is... However I asked their support team what they saw on their end, and they didn't even see it was down/offline.. Yet I don't want to call that One* person a liar, but... Last time this happened, another rep did verify it was down. Recently I asked them what was going on, and finally found out again the cluster was totally down (for all sites on that section).. Yet again today, I'm finding out their actually have issues with a whole bunch of things, and it's not just me..

Yet the messed up thing is, they ONLY* tell that to people who contact them.. You know their "Status" update page? It's missing a TON of server issues on there. They don't update that page until the problem's resolved, or if they do they leave off a bunch of status updates. Not really what I'd call transparent.. I still don't understand this..

...

Before I make this too long... Thanks man, will setup some monitoring services to track this. Also there's no Cron jobs, low traffic and no heavy CPU areas, no SPAM traffic, etc. It's just a few Wordpress sites, literally nothing fancy on this one server. (For a client)...

What's odd is for 8 months it was all perfect, and then suddenly for the past 3-4 months it's been really, really rough service.. (Keep in mind we didn't really change much on our sites, just images/text, basic stuff)..

At least their love their support and interface, lol. ;) Maybe it's just my cluster, I don't know.. I know you can get a A+ server on one cluster, and another cluster will be like a D- and just always perform horrible.. Good point though, made me think.. Will switch clusters and try that. Forgot about this.

Or... you can go for hostgator for $9.99/month and it's just as good if not better.

I've used them before. They were damn awesome.. Zero complaints. Just didn't really fit the professional profile.. I suppose MT's phenomenal support/interface keeps luring me in..

Hmm.. True, will try to switch clusters and see how it goes.. The coupon would be nice, but kinda a small dent when you're selling products in the $15-60K range each, lol. Oh well. :) Will keep working on it, happy to hear I'm not the only one who's dealt with this...

Media Template has been always been shitting. Used them for a client but I moved that over to a reliable host that gave a fuck.

Media Temple sucked complete ass for me.

What's not professional about hostgator? They're a little more user friendly.

This is where a higher price points creates the illusion of value, well done Media Temple.

if your rates are really that high, you should be using something that costs more than $20/month and has better uptime/reliability/support.

LiquidWeb, Rackspace, Linode if you're technical enough.

It always baffled me when we would have $50k+ web dev projects and then the client wanted to skimp on hosting. Like putting a Ferrari on used tires to save a few bucks.

I've used MT for years. Never had a problem with downtime. I have about 30 sites hosted on grid service and 5 on a dedicated virtual server.

Only downside is the price IMO.

Price is worth it for me when you factor in the fanatical support.

Can't find a designer, can't find a web host... whew, you're having a rough time in the online business arena. :)

True... I just figured low traffic for this group of sites it wouldn't warrant one.. Need to starting thinking about reliability as a first concern.. But* I also don't want to manage a Dedicated/VPS setup, have marginal server experience, and anything outside of the basics would be a major time suck. Hmm..

*Coder. ;) Current coder is doing a fairly fantastic job as we speak, so things have turned out much better than expected.. Downside is turn around time, and trying to explain all the corrections.. Now if I can just figure out the hosting stuff I'll be much happier, ha.

I use them for some stuff. Cheap, easy, never wined at me about large sudden traffic spikes, so that's cool.

Haven't been down in weeks for me.

OMG it just happened to me when I'm working on a client's site. This is annoying as fuck.

Like, I go to refresh the page and the browser just stalls until it times out. I tested it on pingdom as well and it gets the same result.

WTF mediatemple.

@OP, are you thinking about switching or something? this is gay as fuck.

Yup, been there.. Exact same issues.

What Cluster are you on? Let me know, perhaps we could be on the same cluster here... (If you ask, Media Temple will tell you). I'm on Cluster 09 I believe..

I'm not quite sure yet, I have client sites that I'd have to move, and that would be a major time suck. Going to switch clusters I suppose? Trying to do some testing to see how bad this problem has really been though.. If that doesn't work, I might just grab a dedicated server and avoid all this nonsense..

:(

Hi there. I am truly sorry you have been experiencing a lot of downtime recently on your (gs) Grid-Service. I do not have enough information to comment on your specific situation but from time to time we do experience some repeat issues with certain Clusters, however, we are usually able to resolve these issues fairly quickly. If you continue to experience situations like this, I encourage you to let us know immediately on Twitter so that someone can alert an admin and quickly investigate the matter.

We're available 24/7 via Twitter at: @MediaTempleHelp

Same issues here. Canceled my account a month ago after being told that I needed to buy more stuff (wtf are grid containers??) to keep my site up. Bullshit
