APNewsBreak: Effort building to change US pot laws - Salon.com

SEATTLE (AP) — From legalizing the industrial production of hemp to establishing a federal tax, an effort is building in Congress to change U.S. marijuana laws.

Democratic Rep. Earl Blumenauer (BLUHM’-ehn-ow-ur) of Oregon tells The Associated Press that lawmakers from both parties have been quietly working on several bills, and he and Colorado Democrat Jared Polis plan to introduce the first two on Tuesday. Polis’ measure would let states legalize pot and require growers to obtain a federal permit, while Blumenauer’s would create a federal marijuana excise tax.

Blumenauer says the recent votes in Colorado and Washington state to legalize recreational marijuana show it’s past time for Congress to end the 75-year federal pot prohibition.

Other measures being discussed include letting marijuana dispensaries obtain bank accounts and deduct business expenses on federal taxes.

Does this mean Canada can decriminalize pot again, without the US getting all butt-hurt about it, forcing Canada to re-criminalize it?

Yes, so long as you guys follow the empire's footsteps in how they regulate it.

If not, you guys will have to fear the wrath of the world's super power.

But seriously, if this passes, I'd be very inclined to move there. Not so much because I want to smoke, but the underlying change in mindset this represents. I mean, this is a huge step in the right direction from this;

To paraphrase Hoppe, legislation is arbitrary law. "Rights" given to you by your masters can be taken away by their whim.

The very notion of "legalizing" the use of marijuana is laughable and insulting. And doubly so since the impetus is to confiscate more loot via taxation.

i've had $300 in a tdameritrade account for a couple years, I've never bought a stock in my life; I know nothing about it.

but because you look like a respectable business man in your avatar, I just went ahead and purchased a massive 480 shares of TRTC. at first it wouldn't let me, some nonsense about orders to buy otcbb must be limit or stop limit orders.. I googled it and changed it to one of the two, I think "Limit" with 0.577 as the limit price.

looking to get seriously rich off this move.

Yeah, its a penny stock(OTC). They are unstable but can pop big on news or pumps. This one comes up in google search when you search for marijuana investing so I expect this would be one of the go to stocks for investors if news gets viral about this.

Shall see tomorrow. I just bought 4.5k shares so not in too deep either.

Problem is all the fucking regulations they want to add keep the small guy down. Already our state senators are trying to make mandatory inspections, mandatory lab testing, and all kinds of shit for both growers and processors.

Also I don't see how the liquor board is going to be able to compete with dispensary prices unless it slaps them with a bunch of regulations to meet.

Just seems like they're not going to let people just grow their own and we'll have a handful of big companies producing it.

I'd love to start a hash making business :)

They're certainly going to try. It sucks, because a minimally regulated market will, of course, be immensely better.

If they impose all these excessive regulations/taxes and keep it in a handful of big companies, people will still grow and the market for unground weed will still be as big or larger than the big corps. Taking the overly controlled approach you described is destined for almost immediate failure.

Yeah right now it's great. Dispensaries sell for as cheap as $175/ounce if you have a medical rec. They have dozens of different types of hashes, tinctures, extracts, edibles, etc

I'd just assumed at some point they'd open to the public, but they're talking about adding all the regulations you'd have if you manufactured food products, open a restaurant, etc all together. Even worse though because you have to send off samples of the bud products to a lab for testing which you don't have to do when running a restaurant, you just put ingredients together. But now they're considering what you put it together as a new product that also has to be tested for "processors".

This is from 2009, before we even had dispensaries:

The cops don't give a shit and haven't for a long time, it's the politicians looking to milk this shit.

pffft it ain't gonna happen.

Also people were posting that stock everywhere on a couple of websites. A lot of people saying its a pump and dump. Hope you get out before it gets dumped!
