CHICAGO (Reuters) – The company that owns the Applebee's restaurant chain said on Monday it was immediately retraining its workers nationwide after a server at a suburban Detroit location accidentally served alcohol to a toddler.
The company, California-based DineEquity Inc, said it would also change the way it serves juice to youngsters to eliminate the chance of any mixups that could result in any more toddlers receiving mixed drinks.
On Friday, Taylor Dill-Reese went to an Applebee's in Madison Heights, Michigan, where -- among other things -- she ordered her 15-month-old son Dominick an apple juice.
What the little boy apparently got instead was a margarita. His mom told WDIV-TV that she only realized something was wrong when Dominick "kind of laid his head on the table and dozed off a little bit and woke up and got real happy."
The little boy reportedly began hailing strangers, too.
Applebee's released a statement on Monday saying it was relieved that Dominick was "not seriously injured as a result of accidentally receiving the wrong beverage" and apologizing to his family "for the stress and worry this caused them."
It said it would begin to serve apple juice to children only from single-serve containers at the table and would "retrain all severs on our beverage pouring policy, emphasizing that non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages must be stored in completely separate and identified containers."

So what is the strangest mix-up you have had at a restaurant?

What kind of retard confuses an apple juice for a margarita? There's probably more to the story than what's presented. Even so, alcohol can kill a young child. At least the kid is okay.

I'm sure it was an accident, and can only imagine how bad the server probably feels. Not only that, but I'm sure she's going to lose her job as a result. Sucks because most people waiting tables really need the small amount of money they earn to survive.

But that being said, Applebee's really needs to pay for this. I don't think an apology is sufficient.

Really. The only explanation I can think of is all the different flavored margaritas they have out there.

applebees.com/Menu_Drinks.aspx <--I guess some of those might come out looking like juice especially if on the rocks.

It couldn't have looked too different if the mother didn't notice it wasn't apple juice as it was being served. If your bar pours both alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks and you have a new inexperienced waiter/waitress (or even an experienced one just not paying attention) I can easily see this happening. They grabbed the wrong drink. Lots of people have never even had or seen a margarita. I could also see this happening with an orange juice based drink like a screwdriver or mai tai too.

When I was somewhere around 7-10 years old I went with my grandma to some kind of conference. She let me run and grab "sodas" from the table and was generally busy so she didn't notice that the sodas was actually white wine. From what I remember being drunk at that age was mostly really weird and not very fun, and then I fell asleep :)

I have a friend who works from Applebees and I'm pretty sure the juice would have come from the bar. The article doesn't say how busy it was. It would have been pretty easy for a bartender to pour the wrong thing or the server to grab the wrong drink. Thankfully no harm no foul.

The fact that Applebees pours such weak drinks probably saved the kid from any harm.

I call bullshit. No toddler is going to drink a margarita without giving the people sitting at the table various clues that something is wrong after just one little sip.

This is bullshit. I can confidently state from empirical experimental data that toddlers will not drink margaritas. Or Baileys. Or brandy. Or a JD and coke.

Just like they won't eat Dave's Insanity Sauce, or Cat Food.

Man, that reminds me of the time that guys baby had a toothache, and he thought it would be a good idea to rub cocaine on her gums to numb it. Apparently the baby got really high, overdosed and died :( He rightfully got arrested. At least this kid was ok and even more so that it wasn't intentional.

Shit happens. Unless they find evidence that the server gave alcohol to the baby on purpose, nobody should be fired, or sued. At least Applebee's is taking responsibility for the incident and putting forth preventive measures.

Ha!

When a 15-month old kid gets served alcohol, somebody fucked up and should be fired for being incompetent. The question is who fucked up in this case.
