Really round number, but ~$1,000 for a decent rifle.

Around $1300-$1600. You can build a pretty basic one for sub $1000, or $2000+ on a fully assembled top of the line.

Check out Daniel Defense. And go to a local gun show, ar-15's are VERY popular. Last one I was at there were 20+ vendors selling everything from receivers for diy to full blown $2500 models with everything imaginable added. If you live in California it's a different ballgame though, not too familar with whats up there.

Actually, looks like Daniel Defense is only selling M4s right now and they are all sold out. Some other manufactuerers are at AR-15 Manufacturers & Builders - price to quality is pretty linear.

Yes. The AR-15 is the civilian M-16.
