Are Longtail KWs Viable?

I'm running a campaign and using a broad 2 word kw (it's standard match on Yahoo tho) and it isn't doing all that bad. However, when I try to expand my kw list, I work to develop longtails but they don't convert at all. I thought longtails would convert better?

Here is essentially what I am doing:

Weight Loss (not bad)
Weight Loss Benefits (bad)
Weight Loss Help (bad)

I don't understand... This goes 100% against everything I have read and tested myself.

Should I be broad or exact matching my longtails? I'm really at a loss here and thought that long tails should get less traffic, but it would be more targetted and convert better.

Buy Weight Loss
Buy Weight Loss Tips

Wouldn't "Weight Loss" be attracting said visitors? It is what is doing best for me right now...

Standard match on Yahoo ≈ exact match.

I agree with TLot. Those longtail keywords seem like people want "free" suggestions and do not want to buy anything.

Right, but I also have groups of the following KWs:

Purchase Weight Loss
Buy Weight Loss
Free Weight Loss

but even those words aren't really converting. My LP and ad copy are great (based on CTR and conversion rate) but I just don't understand why nothing else is converting really.

Should I put "broad match" on (in yahoo, Advanced) and gather data to see exactly what KWs do make sales? Does it work that way?

Thanks!

Nearly every campaign I've tried using [buy word] [product] gets very little traffic to these words. Is that normal? Should I set those words to advanced or standard match?

Stick with standard match until you're clearly profitable.

YSM can be tricky since they can put your ads on irrelevant websites (even when you select search only). If you're using P202, you can track each site and throw all of the sites that don't convert into excluded domains under the administration tab.

So even if I break down my kws like this:

Buy Weight Loss
Buy Weight Loss Tips
Buy Weight Loss Reviews
Weight Loss Reviews
Purchase Weight Loss Reviews

Even the 4 word longtails put on standard match?

I feel like those KWs don't get much volume at all regardless of the match type

how many long tail keywords are you trying?

Yes in general long tail keywords do better but you need tracking for each, some will do shitty so you just drop them and others will do good so you want to develop more lt kws around that. It's a matter of trial and error.

Just cause a KW is long tail doesn't mean it WILL convert better by any means. You can just find a lot more targeted visitors so most of the time it will.

Right, I understand that. I have about 20-30 ad groups with about 5-15 kws in each. 95% of the KWs in here are 3+ words long. I'm currently running my "Weight Loss" (general KW on Advanced match) and 75% of the searches are for that phrase.

Maybe it's not a very popular campaign anymore?
