Are most of the Web Hosting affiliate programs fraud?

I could have posted this thread in the hosting sub-forum but thought I would get more replies here and we can start shooting the shit of the web hosting providers.

I am an affiliate marketer (from India) and own a couple of web hosting ranking and review websites (100% Organic traffic). I promote Commission Junction web hosting offers as well as some in-house web hosting offers offered by the companies themselves. I make like $500 to $800 from these sites via (mostly) CJ offers. But by the payout time or one month (when the companies correct sales) the amount gets decreased to $100 to $200. Which means I am only getting paid $100 to $200 a month instead of $500 to $800 I actually made before the corrections of sales.

I promote Fatcow (gave last place in the rankings) on my websites from which I have lost about 5 to 6 sales in the last two months. That means they corrected the last 5 to 6 sales and paid me nothing (I should have been paid $500 to $600). I sent them an email asking them to provide me an exact reason for these corrections to which they didn't even reply.

I also promote DreamHost and WebHostingHub from their in-house affiliate programs on my websites. The thing about both these companies is eventhough I received more than 300 unique clicks on each of these programs not a single sale is resulted from those clicks (300+300 clicks). I got two signups on DreamHost but didn't make even a dime. When I asked them about these two signups they simply said those two were non-paying account signups that's why I didn't get any commissions.

I am beginning to feel that I am getting cheated my these hosting companies. I hear there is a lot of fraud in the web hosting afffiliate program signups because of the high payout (like $100 and more) that's why most advertisers correct the sales within a month once a sale is generated. I don't even have an idea about which fraud they are talking, if the customer enters a fraud billing information, then the sale doesn't even complete in the first place to later correct it or maybe they enter stolen credit card information (why would a random customer from by website do that is beyond me). Frankly, I have never done any cheating from my side.

Do you think most of the web hosting affiliate programs are fraud and they are just being advertises on networks to get sales and then correct them and not pay you? What are your experiences with any web hosting company affiliate program? Please share your views, Thanks.

Idk, it might be impossible to tell. The only thing you can do send traffic to whatever source sucks the least.

Maybe try adsense? 300 clicks/month on adsense for webhosting traffic should net you at least $600?

Start your own web host and link to it. Shared web hosting isn't that complicated to setup.

will be a lot of scrubbing and shaving going on, you could spend time trying to work out if you're being ripped off, or just factor it in to your margins and move on. Personally I'd do the latter.

Have you tried approaching a hosting company (or owner of a hosting company) you trust and do an exclusive deal with them? Sounds like it'll be more money for you in the long run, and you won't have to deal with some of these headaches.

Exclusive deals ftw mate ;)

Hosting has a ton of churn, esp the dirt-cheap hosting.
Add-in trial periods / free 1st months, etc...

As suggested try AdSense and compare.

Yep - this is definitely something you need to factor in. All predicted expenses should be factored in before you can decide if it's worth you farting in the morning let alone wake up.

I'm sorry. I didn't want to touch this topic. You seem really sincere with your question, so here goes.

I have no experience with anyone you named.

I am beginning to feel that I am getting cheated

It happens. It happens for various reasons I don't have time to spend typing and explaining right now.

If you think "hosting" is bad, try gambling. lol.

Have you given the thought to promote better hosting companies, I guess?
What do you mean by better hosting companies? The ones which offer reliable web hosting service to their customers or the ones which pay you affiliate commissions without any suspicious corrections?

Like I said before I run a couple of websites which rank web hosts by the quality of their services. I promote Hostgator, BlueHost, HostMonster, WebHostingHub, DreamHost, iPage, Fatcow (last place in the rankings, I hear their hosting sucks) and a few more.

I think by "better" he prolly meant hosting companies that don't suck a fat dick.. Any number of those ones you listed could be competing for last place, why not start "REVIEWING" some hosting companies that compete for first place...?

Well as someone who owns a hosting company and gets a bunch of leads pushed to me and having to pay out to affiliates, I must say that I count every damn egg in the basket.

A lot of these leads use coupons that make their first month virtually free, no $ for you.
A lot of these leads request a refund within the first 7 dash, no $ for you.
A lot of these leads create paypal/credit card chargeback, no $ for you and you pay chargeback fee.
A lot of these leads come up as fraudulent and need to be removed manually, no $ for you.

Basically hosting is filled with a lot of shitty clients and fraud, so that + scrubbing = sucks.

Best option?
Work out an exclusive deal with a host for a flat fee to have their services featured on a monthly basis.

The companies I posted above are in the shared web hosting category. As far as I am concerned Hostgator, BlueHost are still good even under the EIG management. And HostMonster, WebHostingHub, DreamHost are OK web hosts, in my opinion.

I also review reseller web hosts, VPS server web hosts, Dedicated server web hosts and cloud server web hosting providers. I rank them according to the service quality they provide. Some of the web hosts I promote under these categories are LiquidWeb, SingleHop, WiredTree, RackSpace, Digital Ocean, KnownHost, JaguarPC, MediaTemple etc.

You can't just review the very few good web hosting providers and leave out all the other ones. By ranking the web hosts I am giving a choice to the customers to choose the best one (the first placed web host) or the least desired web host (the last one). You will also have to take my motives (making money with websites) into consideration.

I've promoted Site5 in the past and have always been paid out by them.

seg

Back when I was churning out shitty websites to sell , on every sale I made to a noob (95% of my sales) I was also giving them a free first month hosting coupon from Hostgator. In three months or so I made about 200 sales and maybe handed out 175 Hostgator coupons (which was the real racket). I got paid from nearly all of them. So I know that Hostgator affiliate program definitely is not fraud, at least it wasn't about 5 or 6 years ago.

Converted to internet time this is roughly 5 or 6 millennia.

that's true but I bet if I did the same thing today the results would be the same.

Every time I handed out those coupons, it was for specific people that I was doing business with, so I knew they would be using it. They did, and I got my money.

If your service was doing a useful job how would you have any sales from the crap, I mean"ok" hosts? If your site had real integrity you would not link to those let alone have aff links. So why not just admit you are in it for the money and accept that you are working with crap (customers and hosts)?

I never said I wasn't in it for money. But the fact is that I also care for the visitors of my website and tell them the we recommend the first ranked web host. Over the months I have changed the rankings of the websites a good number of times every time I see the bad reviews of a particular web host. The fact that that I have changed the rankings of the web hosts and will continue to change the rankings should tell you that I care for the visitors of my website.

Also, Can you tell me if there is a web host out there which doesn't have a single bad review posted on any of those many webmaster forums? What works for you may not work for someone else. That's why you can't say which web hosts are OK and which are crap. I rank web hosts depending on my experience with them and the data I see on the web from time to time. Maybe I should remove the FatCow web hosting company from my websites. Just because you get signups from a not-so-good web host doesn't mean your websites are all crap and you are solely in the business for the money and not give a shit about your visitors.

My websites theme is to rank web hosts. And I rank web hosts depending on the data I have and there maybe some additions and deletions from time to time. I always recommend the first ranked web host to our visitors and that should tell you I care for them. And if they choose to signup with the last ranked web host, that's up to them.
