sup bros,
i've never been diagnosed with ADHD or ADD though I have had "ADD symptoms" my whole life. I think there are a ton of different causes for ADD and ultimately (as usual) it depends on the person. I will share what I have learned about it though, and I am by no means an expert:
1. You guys should know this, but it needs to be said here: Adderall and Ritalin, along with similar drugs are NOT a cure. They only mask the symptoms of a greater problem. And when you come off these drugs, you just feel worse than when you started, along with the fact that your brain function is straight up compromised. And, if you're eating shit (which most of you probably are) and have poor sleeping habits, you're double fucked. I think that Adderall obviously has it's uses (I have used it before, no longer), but it's toxic effects on the body FAR outweigh any short term (literally, 8 hours of benefit for a ton of liver stress, brain stress, etc.) benefits that it provides. Ultimately, it's speed. If you think speed is going to cure your ADD, then I don't know what to tell you.
2. I think that most (if not all) ADD problems stem from neurotransmitter deficiencies, specifically lack of dopamine/dopamine production. I can tell you (as I am currently going through these tests), I was and, to a lesser extent, still am deficient in dopamine. Dopamine is the neurotransmitter that helps with focus. There's a ton of factors that can affect your dopamine production, from stress, to poor eating habits, to poor sleep habits.
I honestly don't really know for sure specifically why my dopamine levels were so messed up (I'll have to ask Dr. Kalish again when I retest this week), though I know it ties into stress, bad sleeping habits, diet, etc. I can tell you that my serotonin levels, which are very much connected to dopamine, were low because my body was unable to process tryptophan/protein. Basically, the standard american diet can severely dilute the HCL/digestive enzymes in your stomach, along with your ability to digest food and absorb nutrients, period. When your stomach has no stomach acid, or compromised stomach acid function or whatever you want to call it, your body has trouble breaking down protein, and from that protein, getting the essential amino acids your brain needs to function. So basically I wasn't getting enough tryptophan --> tryptophan is a precursor to serotonin --> not enough serotonin.
I am assuming that something similar was going on with dopamine - though tyrosine is not an essential amino acid, it is found in food and I can only guess that the same thing that was happening with tryptophan was happening with tyrosine, as they are both amino acids that come from protein.
3. Gluten, motherfuckers. I know there is still a ton of skepticism about grains and whether they are healthy or not, and that's cool, skepticism is good. But try cutting them out of your diet for 30 days and see how you feel. I know that we had the whole self experimentation argument in the other thread - but I'm pretty satisfied with my results (though I definitely had expert help and advice from Dr. Kalish and Sean Croxton (undergroundwellness), among others.
SO, if you're still following me here, I think the reason why glutamine is being recommended is because (I believe) it can help regrow the villi/microvilli in your gut, which help with digestion and protein absorption (and in turn, ideally amino acid absorption as well). Frankly I think that it's always good to take glutamine as it's super good for you, but I have my doubts about it being the be all and end all for ADD treatment.
So here are some suggestions for you fools:
1. I would most definitely incorporate an HCL/digestive enzyme/probiotic into your supplement routine (assuming you have one. I hope you do.). All of these are good for your digestion, and the probiotic helps promote "good" flora growth in your gut, which you want. Most of the foods you guys eat probably are wrecking your shit, so having HCL/digestive enzymes can help at least slow down some of the damage that you're doing.
2. I would recommend trying out tryptophan/tyrosine. Tryptophan is a precursor to serotonin, which, when you have high levels of, you feel like it's the best goddamn day you've ever had in your entire fucking life, and dopamine, which when you have high levels of (or what I really mean to say, is balanced), you are focused and calm as shit. If your body is having trouble digesting tryptophan and tyrosine (which is likely), it can't hurt to have these in your supplement routine. You'll have to experiment with the dosages to see what works for you. I basically was taking a low dose of tryptophan during the day (made me feel good) and a high dose at night before I went to bed (as in high doses that shit will knock you out). Tyrosine I never had a set dosage, most people can probably do ok at 2g a day (and that might even be a lot).
I will say that for most of you, tyrosine will be the best thing you've ever tried. It's fucking legit. Tryptophan is not bad either. If you feel depressed at all on a regular basis, wait until you take this shit.
If you really want to go in depth, I would suggest taking a neurotransmitter test. However, make sure that it is NOT the neurotransmitter test from the company "Neuroscience" - Kalish (and other Dr's) have informed me that this test and company is basically a scam/fraud and should be avoided at all costs as the results are completely inaccurate and bogus. If you do decide to go through with the test, the one you would want to take is the "Organic Cation Transporter Functional Status" test. The company is neuroresearch and their site is neuroassist.com.
And again, gluten fucking sucks and basically wrecks your ability to properly digest food and absorb nutrients. Cutting that out alone can make a world of difference for some people.
The real truth is that ADD is mostly a symptom of a greater problem - being a poorly functioning digestive system, along with stress, bad sleep habits, etc. I think that it's something that should be treated holistically and if you do decide to fix your shit up - make sure you take care of your whole body while you're at it. No sense in fixing one thing and ignoring the rest - it's all connected.
While I'm here - fuck big pharma, and fuck the food industry for poisoning our food with bullshit pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, GMO bullshit, etc. It's fucking ridiculous that this shit goes on. All these dudes are protesting on wall street i'm ready to start a goddamn food revolution over here.
