I don't think it matters if you're selling shovels and picks or mining for gold yourself...you just need to be able to do it in a way where you're building something with persistent value that doesn't dry up over night. It's possible to do that buying traffic.
Also: One of the guys on the panel (Adcock) makes his own shovels, then uses his own shovel. Different strokes for different folks.

They're very much run like businesses though, and turn over tens of millions.
