Wow, that's a spammy title. Anyway, I wanted to share an idea I implemented and currently use.

Download the software, install it on a throwaway .info. Don't worry about installing a custom theme or doing a lot of mods. Don't buy the special version either. The free one is fine. Disable captcha and import some categories from the web. I'd supply some here, but I can't remember where they're at, and I'm in class right now.
Now that you have it installed and running, get links submitted to you.
Semi-automated directory submission tool - Log in
Go on their forums, and request that your new directory be included in their autosubmitter. They will gladly do it.
You'll start getting loads of links every day. You can take the time to build a legitimate directory, or simply use the constantly flowing stream of niche sites as inspiration, which is where the real value is.
Anyway, I've gleaned a ton from WF, and thought I should share. Good luck.
