I'm going to try to run some traffic to a small business with some digitial products. They are handling affiliates directly (as opposed to using a network) and are paying out 10% per sale. The average customer buys 50$ worth of stuff, so each conversion is worth 5$.

Is 10% about average for this kind of thing?

Also, is it usual to be able to cloak your site from the advertiser, to protect your traffic sources?
Or do they usually expect to know everything about you and your site before taking you on as an affiliate?

Since it's CPA, not CPC, should they care where the traffic is coming from if the conversion rate is alright and the chargeback rate is low?

The percentages are all over the map. It varies, and there are many other factors. Look at the cookie persistence (age), look at how the vendor handles returns (do they deduct from your commissions). Some vendors will reverse commissions if the sale came from one of their email campaigns, after you set the cookie (Zappos).

You should clear this with your affiliate. Some affiliates are very concerned about fraud, and fraudulent advertising. If they are unable to see your traffic source, they may disable your account.

Also, research the need to hide your affiliate links from the google-monopoly. This can have an effect on your rankings.
