Aweber Email Marketing - Steer Clear - Really

I've been an affiliate of Aweber for over 8 YEARS. Yes. I am oldschool. I used to advertise them heavily back in the day but even then they were a little questionable with their affiliate relationships, so I dropped them and moved onto better options, both for me as an affiliate, and the actual customer.

Fast forward 6 years or so, I am getting these annoying $50 checks from them still - some guy probably died and Aweber is probably just draining his Paypal account and giving me whatever small % it was lol). Back in the day they had no option to adjust check size.

I've had some horrifically bad postal service in my country, a hilarious story of postal incompetence causing checks to never make it to me on many, many occasions.

I've now realized I've probably lost over $1000 in checks that never made it to me. This means Aweber still has my money.

Why I am here outing them is due to their horrifically poor responses to my requests asking them to call their bank and list the checks that never made it to me (below), so they can add it as a payable balance to my Aweber account, for the next check cycle.

Some of the responses I've just smiled at how ridiculous they are. Basically it boils down to: "We Can't be bothered. Go Away".

I've even offered to PAY THEM $150USD for someone to be arsed to call their bank and spend 20 minutes getting a total $ of checks not paid out. Still no. Like damn... I gotta offer them % so I can get paid... and they still can't be arsed. Nice.

Now, I've had to ask this of couple other networks (to help me out with my predicament here). It's no one's fault, its not theirs, but its not mine. Now every time I've asked other networks, its been an "OK no problem" response. Until Aweber. Who, whilst we have been in the 21st Century for the last 15 years now, refuse to pay affiliates through anything other than checks. Plainly embarassing.

I never really liked this company. Now I like them even less.

Below you will find a screenshot somewhat proving my long existence with them, and my full back and forth with them. I've done my best to get them to budge on like, paying me what I am owed, but apparently they can only "recut checks within a year". Like this is some sort of acceptable reason to keep my money. "Sorry Fred, we cant pay you for monday tuesday and wednesday, and thurday... just Friday.... just because..go away now".

Silliest most incompetent shit I've ever read. I honestly couldn't care less about this company and I was tempted to just move on, but why should I? I never Out companies on the Internet unless they're truly terribad like Aweber is. I've offered them money, which I never should have had to do, to help me out.

They do get an A+ for niceness whilst refusing to pay me what might be several thousand dollars for no particularly good reason, mostly being laziness and incompetence shielded by a feigned minor tax issue.

I am hoping this post wakes someone higher up to do something. I need you all, friends, to chime in here. Abuse me, abuse them, what should I do?

Below is the correspondence to date about this, + screenshot of checks sent to me (notice the 2007).

Hi

Please cancel and reissue (or include in next check) the following two checks:

7/17/2012 for $59.79 (No. 12345 - slightly older design)
7/17/2014 for $53.82 (No. 12345)

Due to a hilarious and disturbing screw up of our Postal service they just arrived today!

If there is a small stop fee that is fine. Rather get something than nothing. Please proceed.

Andrew

Also, if possible, please just see what checks have not been cashed prior to this year and please just add them all into the next payment. Apply stops as required.

I am sorry for the inconvenience, but the postal service in my city is epically horrible and cannot be trusted, but is out of my hands unless you can do paypal in future etc.

Thanks for your help

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for your email! I would be happy to look into the checks that were sent to you, I would just need for you to verify the affiliate ID. We would be able to recut checks that were not cashed that are more than 6 months old, and less than a year old. Any checks older than one year, unfortunately, would not be able to be recut. At this time, we do only pay out affiliate commissions through check. We do not offer payment through Paypal. I can definitely pass this feedback along to our affiliate team.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with in the meantime. I will await your response with your affiliate ID.

Hi

Thanks for the response. Affiliate ID: XXXXXX

Any checks that have not been cashed, are therefore still in Awebers bank account, and therefore, while not specifically the fault of you or I, Aweber has yet to provide me with funds.

I dont want checks recut... more than happy for you guys to just figure out what was not cashed and leave it in my affiliate balance for the next check.

Please do Forward the idea of using Paypal or bank wire etc. Postal services around the world are not as great as the USA So I am going to need you guys to step up here and help me out.

Again I have to re-iterate, I have not been paid by Aweber. This is what it boils down to, there is no side tracking this point. My money is still at Aweber.

Thanks for your help resolving this matter for me.

Hi Andrew,

Tim is not currently available but I am more than happy to assist. Unfortunately, we are unable to combine any checks or put those earnings back into the account. Please let me know if you would like the check available for recut from 7/17/2014 to be recut and I would be happy to assist with this.

If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Have an amazing day.

Hi

Thanks, but again, Aweber has not paid me what I am owed. There is no side-stepping, using some sort of wierd policy to round-about it. You haven't PAID me. The Money is still in YOUR account. The checks are no doubt expired, and I've never seen them. Meaning they were never sent. I am not going to buy the $1 total it took to create and post each. Fine me if you wish somehow.

"Too bad, we only do up to half of last year" is not a good enough answer. You have my money. Respectfully, its time to step up and help me out property please. Escalate to a manager if you need to. I need to get paid.

On a side note, may I also humbly suggest it's been 15 years since we moved out of the last century and its finally time to start offering electronic means of payment to avoid drama like this that is neither of our fault.

It is neither of our fault that this occured, but the money is still in YOUR account, so the legal onus is on Aweber to step and help me get paid all that is owed. Which is also absolutely reasonable. Falling back to this idea of "the last 6 months is enough", is not acceptable.

Someone will need to do abit of manual grunt work with the Aweber bank for 20 minutes to figure out whats gone wrong, and I appreciate this extra effort - and I am happy to pay a fee for your time. But not paying me Everything is effectively like am employer saying "Sorry but I am only paying you for yesterday, I cant help you regarding Mon Tues and Wed because because I cant be bothered". Unacceptable and very likely illegal.

Take care of this please. I am not taking "the last half of the year only" as an answer and I don't want to have to escalate this outside of Aweber. I remember back in the day your CEO and the getresponse CEO going to battle on forums, I wonder if thats still the case. I have taken screenshots of everything in my account.

Bill me a huge $150USD for your hour or so this will take of employee time. Pretty unbelievably generous on my end, but confirm EVERYTHING I am owed and put it in my Aweber account for next check, which I will be watching for like a hawk.

Please let me know when complete.

Dear Andrew,

Stacy is currently out of the office, but I would be happy to assist you.
I'm sorry for the frustration that you experienced regarding your postal
service with previous checks. Regarding our policy for issuing a new check
for commissions previously earned, we are only able to reissue an Affiliate
check once the check is expired (occurs 6 months after the issue date) or
if we receive the check back to our office. These recur requests are only
honored within 12 months from the issue date of the original check.

The reason why will not reissue a check older than 12 months would be for
our tax purposes of when the funds were issued. The same applies for checks
being issued for commission periods - they cannot be combined with any
other checks.

We can still recut a check for 7/7/2014 if you need. Please let us know so
we can alert the administration of this.

Regarding the payment options available, I can let you know that our team
has been working on providing alternative payment options other than by
postal check; however, I'm afraid at this time that would be the only payment
option available.

Thanks for the reply Joe

Unfortunately your answer regarding tax issues is not an acceptable answer. A multi-million dollar company like Aweberwill live with a minor tax hiccup, that can be corrected IF REALLY required but its not. We both know this is a silly reason, and not even a drop in the pond, and really, ultimately if it comes down to it, amazingly undefendable reason to not pay someone.

1. I have not been paid by Aweber
2. Aweber still has My money.

There's nothing more to say on this. I'm owed I will ballpark, about $1000, so please pay it.

No need to recut checks, just add the balances of the failed/expired ones to my Aweber account and let me know when done. I've had this problem with other affiliate networks, they've helped me out without this back and forth resistance so I have plenty of energy to exert here. Ask your manager to make an exception and get it done please.

Cheers
Andrew

Dear Andrew,

I have discussed your situation with our management here, but I’m afraid the information
I previously provided you with would remain. We would not reissue checks beyond 12 months
from the issue date nor would we add past commissions to a current commission for the
reasons previously outlined. If you would like for us to recut the 7/17/14 check for you, please
let us know so we can provide the details to our administration to do so.

Your friends at GetResponse when I asked them for the same thing:

---------
Hi Andrew,

Thank you for your reply.

I have advised our Accountancy Dept. your checks cancellation
request. They will contact our bank on your behalf and as soon
as we receive green light from their side I will add those checks
amounts back into your affiliate earnings.
----------

This is what professionalism and service is.

It's unfortunate that I will have to go on public forums pasting our correspondence and also screenshots of my account to demonstrate how long I've existed (to establish my credibility), to get some action from Aweber. I will do this shortly if I don't hear back and I will not be contacting you again like this after that point. I am too busy to deal with this small amount of money right now so I am giving you, respectfully, a final window to step up and take care of this as you should of 4 emails ago. Make sure to inform me Asap if you intend on adding the balance back to my account and letting the old checks go.

Again this scenario is not your fault, but its not my fault either - you still have my money. Your lack of both desire and action has no place on the Internet anymore for a maturing industry such as yours, but maybe our friends on the marketing forums will help incentive you.

Andrew

Dear Andrew,

I'm sorry, but we would not reissue a check beyond 12 months from the issue
date and would not add a balance from a previous check to your account for the
reasons previously outlined to you.

Regarding the 7/17/14 check, if you would like for us to recut this check to you,
please let us know so we can provide the details to our administration to do so.
Otherwise, no recut request would be submitted for that check.

you should post this in STS section, I think this section doesn't get indxed.

or a mod might move this to STS.

Other things you can try:

Go to twitter and find the CEO tweet him the url of this thread, buy a hundred retweets off fiverr.

this one worked for someone on here having issue with paypal holding money should work with any other company.

update on what happens.

"Sorry, but we don't want to pay you. Our company policy doesn't want us to explicitly state this, but you better know it. We never had this discussion. Now, go F yourself."

But seriously, this is ridiculous. You really need to talk to someone in charge, because low level staff will only regurgigate the shit you've been told so far. I will not promote aweber any longer, that's for sure.

Do you know what kind of account nightmare this kind of thing would be to track down on their end YEARS after the fact? They don't just store every record indefinitely each year. When they close up the books each year in any large company there are always a small bit of "extra" either +/- that they just roll in to match everything up.

So after they roll it up like that - they have no way to go back 4 years later and see oh you didn't cash these 4 checks we sent you, here you go.

If you want your money YOU are going to have to be the one doing the work. Go through all the records you have and figure exactly which checks you didn't cash. Send them a formal letter requesting all the money with a list of specific checks you never "got" from them and demanding payment.

This really isn't Aweber's bad dude. This is real life and B2B business, it's your responsibility to make sure you are paid the money you are owed in a timely fashion. Many companies will never send you a cent until you send them an invoice asking for what they owe.

Stuff like this is just like when every year without fail I have a few contractors ask me in April where their 1099s are, which the answer is always mailed to the last address you gave me on your W9. "Oh but I moved can you send me another ASAP?" well of course I can drop everything and do something quickly to cover for your mistake! In those cases I always email it to them same day because it's easy for me so why not. But the attitude they have is always that it's MY responsibility and not that it was a B2B relationship and they should grow up and learn to stay on top of finances.

If a contractor came back from 2011 or some shit and pointed out they never cashed some checks I sent them and requested I go through my records to figure out exactly how much they didn't cash and pay them I'd ignore them all day long.

Also I wasn't trying to be harsh. Aweber is totally shitty for having a set up like this in the first place where they pay only check and don't recut them after 1 year.

But the point I wanted to make is that I bet that is 100% in there terms and it's not that unusual for a business to operate that way even in 2015 in B2B. Many businesses will only pay by check and will only pay on things less then 12 months old, making it 100% your job to make sure you get paid within 12 months and most even require you to tell them how much they owe you with an invoice. They are very upfront about it though and you have to decide to deal with companies like that or not.

But should move this thread to STS and serve as a warning to anyone working with Aweber. They are serious they won't bother paying you for anything a year old so keep on top of things and make sure you get paid before then.

If Aweber can't be arsed doing a call to their bank to figure out which checks to one guy didn't get cashed, thats on Aweber. I am not doing legwork for them, not that it would matter to them.

Mods please move thread to STS
