I need a way to track banner ads that I may place on a third party website.

I want to be able to track conversions by dropping a cookie or however the heck affiliate companies do it.

Is there a way to do this cost effectively?

Have the link on the banner go to a custom link made using Google's URL Builder: URL Builder - Analytics Help

Then in Google Analytics, you can see where the traffic came from and your conversion rate
