It's so funny when I hear people being so protective of ideas. (People who want me to sign an nda to tell me the simplest idea.) To me, ideas are worth nothing unless executed. They are just a multiplier. Execution is worth millions.

Explanation:

  • Awful idea = -1
  • Weak idea = 1
  • So-so idea = 5
  • Good idea = 10
  • Great idea = 15
  • Brilliant idea = 20

  • No execution = $1
  • Weak execution = $1000
  • So-so execution = $10,000
  • Good execution = $100,000
  • Great execution = $1,000,000
  • Brilliant execution = $10,000,000
To make a business, you need to multiply the two.

The most brilliant idea, with no execution, is worth $20. The most brilliant idea takes great execution to be worth $20,000,000.

That's why I don't want to hear people's ideas. I'm not interested until I see their execution.

In fact, I would downsize the $ values all around, right now, weak idea, weak execution = 1000$? FUCK me! I am RICH!

this is about accurate and is how google considers ideas too amongst their own workers. ideas are cheap, everyone has "ideas", its all about actually executing them.

"omg lets make a sick ass map app that shows the entire planet in 2 inch resolution! we can show locally targetted ads and shit!" -- yep. now go do it. much harder.

I disagree.

Look at the companies out there who obtain patents and don't ever execute. Then they wait for Apple, RIM, Google, etc... to execute to perfection and sue them for patent infringement.

Also, are you saying that if I mass produced time machines and could sell them affordably and at a profit that $200 million would be the ceiling? Assuming that if one person went back in time before I made the time machines it didn't fuck up everyone else's time machine. They could all co-exist in different times simultaneously.

Just playing Devil's advocate. And being a dick. But in all honesty, I agree with the concept that there are too many ideas and not enough execution. I face the same problem myself but ideas are fun.

if the idea is to come up w/ an idea, patent it, and sit around waiting for someone to infringe, then that is the excellent execution itself. depends what your intention is. and before you get all high and mighty saying patent trolls are dicks (they sure sure), we're all in the biz of shaving every last dollar we can off consumers so don't even start (we're dicks too).

me like this chart.

A great idea is more often poorly executed. Implementation is more important. You have to get behind your idea and push it, sometimes its poorly executed because it has never been done, eventually execution improves because of commitment to implementation.

If you have a great idea, do something about it.

Excellent post!

I'd like to add that by saying that although they sound brilliant in your mental masturbation fantasy land, most ideas are so-so. The only way you find out how good idea is is actually testing it out.

Lets have some more of this shit!
