how the heck do you price out a server there with all the bells and whistles without signing up?
Linode, UNMANAGED, is a good value.
Their managed service, however, is $100 additional PER node. That's just not a good deal. Either LiquidWeb, WiredTree or KnownHost would come in at a much lower cost, and all are well regarded.
In fact, if you can pay $100 + the VPS node cost, you can probably move up to a managed dedicated server.

Near instant support replies. They stay on top of the latest exploits. Good prices. I randomly got my server upgraded with roughly 25% better stats(ram/bw, etc..) for free. Cpanels for each domain at one click, and WHM for the VPS.
The ONLY thing I thought was odd, is that they opened a support ticket themselves for me to look at old backup files I had on the server - they were asking me to clean them out for storage, even though it was some meaningless amount. I thought that was really weird that they were scouring my files for stuff to delete. If you're doing anything you don't want the world to see, this might be a concern. I ignored the ticket and closed it, never heard about it again. Anyone else ever get this?
