got denied when I tried to get a credit card through my local bank because of no credit history which is kind of why I wanted the card to begin with to build credit.

anyone here recommend a good credit card to start with?

don't need a huge balance as I just want to put small things on it to build good credit history

I have seen members here mentioning the starwood amex card a lot.

Go to bank of america, find a cool chick there, talk to her and get a partially secured credit card. When I was in the same situation I remember I got a card with $500 credit limit for a $99 deposit (partially secured) and built up a good credit history in 6 months.

Never heard of a partially secured card, but what faceblogger said is the way to go (a secured card). I started off with going to bank of america. I gave em $200 and they give you a secured card which will build your credit over months. After that you'll get offers all the time. If you wanna learn more pm me. I'm on my iPad but I can type more at my office Monday

Find a card with a ridiculously high APR, those are the ones that'll generally accept anyone. I think starwood Amex are fairly exclusive, in that you'll need a pretty decent credit rating already to get one.

yeah I believe you are right about star wood Amex being exclusive

^You obviously talk out of your ass. I talk from experience. Couple years ago I was in the exact same situation as OP. Applied to pretty much every single bank and got denied by all of them. Then I saw an ad online from Capital One saying they accept people with low or no credit. I applied. got accepted right away for a 3k MC platinum. Here you go: Credit Card Applications for Limited / No Credit

In fact, thinking about it, I got an Amex through my bank when I hit 18, not really an Amex, but having some history with them may help you move up to a starwood card. Have you ever told your bank how much you earn? I was making basically nothing when I got my cc, but I told them I was making $150k a year. It worked, I got a $2.5k credit limit (you normally don't get any credit limit at all until you're like 20/a student).

credit score hack

have a relative/roommate add you as an authorized user if possible, wait a month for the new statement to generate and report the line on your credit report, now all of a sudden you've got a credit history

Orchard Bank or First Premier will approve almost anyone unsecured. The fees are a little high at first, but help you establish your credit pretty quickly. Then you can move on to bigger and better cards. I had to use them after my bankruptcy in 06 and I got plenty of offers soon after.
