Best FREE way of promoting online?

I've always(obviously) been a fan of straight up PPC or SEO. Not pansy "let's love jesus and move the world with quality content" SEO, but actual "let's get this shit ranking". Obviously you have to start somewhere, and may have limited funds, but it's all about reinvesting.If so, what are the ones you'd recommend instead? Thanks.
Things like article marketing and adsense "shared revenue" site make me want to shank a bitch.
It's all good for when someone's just getting going, but it should not be mistaken for a proper business model.
Personally I would first join a forum then immediately add a bold signature with a link to the "ABSOLUTE CRAP" I wanted to sell in my profile and start posting all over the place so it looks really obvious that I have no interest in being a part of the community but rather just want to get my crappy links on a forum. Sounds like a play to me...

Doing proper keyword research and doing article marketing can be a good free promotion tool. By free, I mean it costs $0 (unless you outsource your articles) but it takes a lot of time and work.
Write articles for several low-competition keywords and submit them to a couple authority article sites like ezinearticles and they should rank if you did a good job choosing keywords. One problem with this is that these low-comp kws are going to be getting a low search volume, and then you have to hope the people reading them actually click through your link in the sig to go to your website.
