Has anyone ever built a clan website, with forums / community ...

What would be the best option ? joomla ?

Something easy to setup that doesnt require tons of tweaking to get it to do what you need.

I did one back in the day for my CS team. I just used a template, and linked up the forum to vbulletin. But if I were to do it again, I'd definitely go with drupal/joomla. Why reinvent the wheel?

Because for gaming, the wheel you're mentioning is square.

You could try a white label social network provider like ning.com, they have a free version and if other clans utilize ning the authentication/integration with other ning sites could make it easy to network with other clans if you want to form a league or something along those lines.
