Booking a trip to Mexico with the gf and wanted to know where we should go and I will take any resort recommendations too.

We were thinking of Mayan Riviera as we have had lots of friends say its best but I figure I would take some advice here too. Also best site to book the trip through, we live in Canada btw.

Fred Reed LOVES Guadulajara

If you don't know who he is, I recommend this book:

It's basically like reading an old veteran's crabby blog... each 'chapter'/post is 2.5 pages max and can be great bathroom material.

He's an expat now living in Guadalajara... It's Libertarian slanted but he never admits it, pines for the good ol' days when America wasn't a bunch of pussies. I have a feeling typical WF members would like it.

I'm 80% through it, the only problem is that many of his rants drive at the same point

Anyway, that post made me think of that. I have no clue what Guadalajara is really like... but I did hate Cancun.

I've been in mazatlan for the past 3 years we get a fair amount of tourists but nothing compared to Cancun.

I thought puerto vallarta was pretty nice and Guadalajara is just a 4 hour bus ride away. I would like to move to guadalajara, it is a pretty awesome place, perfect weather and plenty of stuff to see, but there's no beach (most tourists to mexico come here for the beach).

Depends what you are into.

I've visited Cancun, Cabo and Puerto Vallarta/Manzanillo. Cancun is good for the clubs/party scene and the clear, warm water/diving. Cabo is desert climate so it's the dry-hot weather and can be cooler at night. The water temp can be a bit colder at times due to the Pacific Ocean currents mixing with the Sea of Cortez. Cabo has grown a lot over the last 10-15 yrs but it still has a smaller town feel to it compared to Cancun. Puerto Vallarta is also more touristy with a sub-tropical climate. But if you travel just outside of PV along the coast either south or north a few hours you can easily get away from that.

Personally, I like Cabo. It has a good mix of small local restaurants or you can do the all-inclusive thing at a 5-star hotel if you are into that.

I was just there in November. It's really nice there. About an hour away from cancun, and the ride isnt that bad. You get to drive through all sorts of areas. The people there are crazy nice. On the bud ride we stopped at a 7-11 and the bus driver was telling me what the good stuff was that we dont have in america. I ended up with 2 soda's and bag or like taco chips and 5 cookies for 3$. Don't stay at the oasis resort though. People were still nice but it rained a little to hard (outskirts of hurricane ida) and half the rooms leaked. A lot of the people are from europe that go to that part of mexico. Also, their style down there is 3 hour dinners and 2 hour lunches if you don't go to the buffet, atleast is was at our resort. Btw its called riviera maya =)

Hey man im from Vic too.. Im going to the Mayan Riviera with my gf in a week (11th-18th). I've been before and its AMAZING. GO THERE. Cancuns cool but more of a party town. Puerto Vallarta sucks and so does "Nuevo" Vallarta and im not a fan of Mazatlan either.

Stick to the Mayan you wont be dissapointed.

I recommend Ciudad Juarez or Tijuana.

We get a fair amount of drug killings here but why in the world would anyone want to go on a vacation to Juarez, probably the most violent city in mexico. I think they had nearly 2.5k-3k homicides for 2009

These guys kill each other over youtube videos, no joke. I would stay far away from any place where indians have a lot of guns and grenades

For the Donkey shows, duh!

I was in Reynosa and Nuevo Leon (both are border towns as well) just 2 weeks ago and there was no trouble. Mexican military in humvees manning mounted machine guns driving all over the place. It was safe enough.
