Hey Everyone,
I'm starting a blog that is about how to promote yourself as an independent musician, and will be more or less a "one stop" site for various articles written on self promotion and various DIY musician topics. My question and biggest obstacle at this moment is how I should present myself as the blog author to my readers. Since I am a DIY musician myself and have a very good insight to how the DIY industry works, I feel I can supply very solid content. The problem is that I don't really have PROFESSIONAL credibility and expertise...just my knowledge from being in the industry over the years. It seems to me that the most successful blogs are the ones where the readers feel somewhat close to the author, whether it's what he/she looks like/where they live/hobbies...etc. Do you think it would be detrimental to this blog to not have the professional creds (such as tour creds/notable album sales/ex-music marketing manager...etc)?

The options i've considered are...

1. Being straight forward with the readers that I am not an "expert" but offer valuable insights as a fellow DIY musician.

2. Create a faux personality and write behind that (tho this may create probs)

3. Don't write about who I am at all....

Any feedback on my conundrum would be highly appreciated

This is my first post, so I didn't read the forum rules and used the boobies icon when I shouldn't have, so please flame me like a greasy hot dog...

Normally, I read without posting. These guys/gals are geniuses about affiliate marketing. But about this question, I have something to offer. I’d go with option #3. That way, most of your readers will assume you know what you are talking about or that you don’t AFTER they have read your blog. Otherwise, most won’t even read it.

Don’t get me wrong, that’s what I did when I had a wealth of information to share on a professional topic but no ‘professional creds’ to my name. I did it when I wanted to write a book on the topic. Without ever putting my name on the book or saying a word about the author, it was accepted as a ‘required text’ by our states’ Universities when teaching students about that topic. Not too shabby!

If anyone asked on your blog, I’d just tell them that to protect my identity, I wasn’t going to release any ‘personal’ information. Readers will give your material the weight it deserves but only if they haven’t already formed an opinion about the author. But, that’s what I would recommend. Others on this fine board may recommend something else.

btw, nice tits.

Tensegrity is a good friend and old roommate of mine, and I should have warned him about the boob icon rule, but it slipped my mind. I know I can't hold back the flames, but maybe if he posts some boobies, all will be better. :)

Please read the rules. No boobs = neg rep points.

Actually to clarify some points. I did read the rules and did see the rule about no boobs outside of the shoot the shit section. But as i was skimming through other sections I saw numerous boob icons...so I didnt know how golden of a rule it was. I did actually post some, but SEO Mike censored me....so if you guys want to see em you gotta talk to SEO Mike about that. Regardless of that....any feedback is appreciated. Thanx.

I agree!!!!

Thanx Steve and Patrick,
That does seem like a more viable solution. I appreciate the feedback greatly. Regarding boobs...I guess i'm still unclear as to what rule I violated?? I posted them, and they were taken down...unless i'm just being flamed for being new. Please lemme know if it's safe to post them here (and I will), b/c I don't wanna any neg point. Gracias.

Hey T, you might wanna post it at shooting the shit section. Check my name and search my previous thread for example & off course don't forget to add my name into your buddy list as my secret admirer :p

Again...thanx for the suggestions guys. If anyone is still reading this thread I have one more queary if I decide to go the anonymous Author route...which is should I keep my articles open for discussion and comments...or should I just keep everything closed from commenting/conversation? I know that most authors participate in their comments section/reply to comments...etc. So if I am Mr Anonymous Author here...what would be best option? Thanx again.

Is it a bad idea to use a obviously false alias?

Say you have a site about love or what not and use a name like Dr Love or something?

Or is that somehow shooting myself in the foot?

HH
