Here's the blogging case study I mentioned.

I'll list out a step-by-step process to develop a blog from scratch, and generate revenue from it.

Here's the conditions I'll be working under:
1) I won't link from any of my existing domains. It'll be a standalone blog.
2) I'll be using mostly WH techniques.

The steps used will be listed, though I won't disclose the domain.
But there should be enough details for you to follow and apply in your own niche.

A lot of the success in WH blogging lies in the strategy you use and ensuring your business system is airtight and bulletproof. (luck plays a factor too).

Whatever I show below is what I use myself, and as always, most people will not achieve much success because they fail to take action.

PS: This is more the details of a case I'm implementing, so you won't need to indicate you're 'participating'. If you've got questions or would like to add in more info, go ahead.

Here's the first stage:
Niche research-
Use tools like Google Trends (trends.google.com), check out the hot topics in ebay pulse, amazon best sellers, the Yahoo! Overture tool (inventory.overture.com), top technorati keywords.

My preference is to do a long tail topic (like starting a business), rather than hot topics (like the virgina tech shooting or hurricanes/tornados) which might have a short lifespan.

The exception to this would be topics like christmas, the superbowl, or the PGA Tour which could give you very high returns even over a short duration.

I presume you are talking of Adsense on the blog to make money? Forgive me, Im new to blogs! I've tried a simple one on my home country (Ireland) and have made 69 cents so obviously I need SOME guidelines! Straight away I see you mention research, whereas I just wrote about my homeland!

I look forward to the remainder of your post.

My preference is to use CPA or affiliate mktg offers to monetize off the blog.

Doing an Ireland blog would be ok for a hobby, but you'd want to niche it (perhaps on entertainment, or travel, or business) to generate income.

For country-specific research, you could look at the lonely planet guide to ireland, and figure out how you could create a blog to monetize off tourist traffic. maybe a link to a hotel/accomodation portal where you'd earn aff commissions.

It'll be good to keep the keyword in mind, as you register your domain.

Once you've done your research, I'd go register an appropriate domain.
I like namecheap.

Link the domain to your hosting, and either install wordpress manually, or through fantastico.

Great idea with the blog study, Andrew... looking forward to it.

Btw, I just read your 'Magazine Meme' blog post about niche research.... I agree that Us Weekly is a very good resource for finding those fast moving consumer good products. My wife subscribes to it and I go straight to the ads for niche ideas and see what is 'hot'. I discovered a very trendy item that was highlighted in a few issues a little over a year ago and found nobody was advertising online for it.... so I put up 1 ad and spent just under $1k in PPC over about a 1-yr period and did just under $20k in profit.

Trends can be short-lived but can be VERY profitable if you get in early.

Andrew, great idea! Your timing couldn't be better, I'm launching a bunch of hobby oriented blogs right now. I'm actually going to be using AuctionAds (yes, I know the tracking is messed up right now) for two reasons: 1) I can't find any good affiliate programs for my niche...and 2) I believe that eBay is the best source of collectibles and hobby related item, plus eBay is trusted by the sheeple. :D

12 weeks? Why so long?

Good question. I should have clarified in my example that the fuel behind getting traffic would be purely from free methods - article marketing at the forefront.

However I would like to learn how to speed up my progress, which is why I am here.

Perfect, I really needed some good suggestions. I'm pretty sure I have my blog optimized for search engines, and my content is good. The only thing I have problems with is traffic and monetization. I look forward to your posts Andrew. By the way, I'll be using your techniques on my Winter Case Study Blog about cars and a blog I just made about bikes and another one about trucks.

No one can really help you there. We all want faster progress. I guess that means you have to work harder.

Dude,
Sideshowtoy.com has a nice selection (I was tempted to buy some myself). and they've an aff prog too.

They got really nice LoTR, Star Wars and Star Trek collectibles.

The downside is that they might've moved their aff prog to CJ in the last couple of months...

They're very regular with updating affiliates too (though I haven't read their recent newsletters). check them out.
