I'm really getting tired of odesk, I hired a guy with a ton of good feedback to do some php work and he told me it would be ready in 2-3 days. The guy had some really good feedback so when he stopped replying to emails for 5 days I started researching his email/username more and found out that for the past week he had been spending about 6 hours per day (according to forum timestamps) doing play by play breakdown and analysis of a bunch of soccer games from over 5 years ago... I confront him and he tells me that he wasn't able to work because a fucking hurricane came and swept his desktop away. I'm like what the fuck dude there weren't any reported hurricanes in India and New Delhi is like 1,000+ miles away from the ocean how the hell is a hurricane going to jack your desktop and then he just says he's sorry and cancels the project. But i guess I can only blame myself for even considering something on odesk would be done on time.

Open an office, and hire some employees then. Otherwise, be quiet, and live with the pitfalls of contracting out to 3rd world countries and having people work for you who live 14,000kms away, and don't speak English.

Next time just go to fiverr. It's so cheap that you can afford purchase multiple gigs from different people for the same task - if some of them end up being late you've got insurance (plus you can dispute and get a fiverr credit refund on late jobs - never had a problem with it); if all of them do the work on time you've overpaid but still end up with a bargain.

A single php job wouldn't justify an office

This was more than a $5 article/backlink gig.

What I do is make a very good and clear job description (if it's not for a fly by night job).
Apart from being clear this looks professional and will atract more professional job seekers.
Then I also state very clearly what I don't want and what my expectations are.

Not bullet proof and tossers still apply, but it's a good start I think.

Also test communication, does he she reply quickly to emails? That's pretty important and says something about the applicant too.

P.S. for coding, try http://careers.stackoverflow.com/, my bet is your better off there then at any other freelance site (haven't tried it yet).
I think that because often when I'm doing some coding myself I find good solutions in forum threads from that website.

what if one day you woke up and your nipples were completely gone
like no scars or anything, just flat skin
and then once you leave your room you find out your dad died last night
and then several days later, you find out that for your entire life your dad had been sneaking into your room while you slept
and sucking on your chest to make to gigantic hickeys where your nipples should be
because you were born without them
not for any sexual reason, just so you would fit in

god bless you dad

Then contract to a higher-end development firm that charges $100/hour. Otherwise, move on, and accept the consequences of dealing with freelancers in 3rd world countries who work for $8/hour.

I use highly rated fiverr coders to test for small jobs, and then hire them off fiverr for the bigger php jobs once they have proven themselves, seems to work well so far.

I have also had better luck on Odesk when I use somebody associated with an agency vs solo

If it's serious php work, disregard applications from India, pakistan, and china. Look for programmers from east european countries. You'll be paying a little more ($10-15/hr) but at least you don't have to deal with this bullshit.

I had to abandon my odesk account because of similar reasons. I suggest you try to use vworker or freelancer. They're much more reliable in my opinion.

this. i personally wouldn't do php programming for less than $45/hour.
