While not a forum explicitly for expats, there are many expats and storied world-traveler types who post on The Black Flag Cafe© • Index page (run by Robert Young Pelton, who wrote "The World's Most Dangerous Places"). If you have any country-specific question you will receive a knowledgable answer from someone who has lived there, probably recently.

(I used this site a great deal before I moved to the Middle East in 05-06).

Looks like a good read just bought his book.

Whatever you do, don't go to Casablanca. Morocco is the absolute worst country I have ever been to.

1) They have one breakfast. Dry sandy bread, and two jams. For lunch and dinner you have old meat with lots of olives. If you lived there this is what you would eat for the rest of your life.
2) They'll sell to you, and if you don't want it "Fuck you!"
3) You will be giving 4 bottles of water to last you and your girlfriend four days in the Sahara desert.
4) A French family (who is only going for one cool night) will take half your water (they didn't bring any) and you will have to ration the remainder amongst yourselves.
5) Take one sip every half hour so you can pass the time while the sand blows straight up into your eyes/nostrils/the air nonstop from ten am to 7 pm.
6) Don't take more than that because you will die of thirst if you drank what you wanted to drink.

Get on a plane and go. Expats are usually old farts who sit in communities of expats.

Yeah, without more input that's about the best advice here so far. Pack your laptop and a backup of your laptop and just do it.

Did you get stuck on some shitty canned tour or something? Everyone that I know who's been has had a fantastic time. Marrakesh is the preferred place to go and there are some some fantastic hotels and resorts there that look just amazing. You can take an overnight train down from Tangier and then do day trips to other places.

Tangier is like the Tijuana of Africa from the sounds of things. If you need a rug, that's the place to be.

I've been tempted to go myself, because it's so close (I can see Morocco on a clear day from my balcony) but there are a million places in Europe I haven't been to yet so that's more interesting to me at this point.

I would love to do a safari sometime though.
