Can I get into trouble with this?

I'm probably over analyzing but I want to know if anyone thinks i might get into trouble with a network by setting up my affiliate link to look like the merchant's domain name...for example...

if i'm promoting "insuranceoffer.com" then I go buy the domain "insuranceofferr.com" (notice the double "r" at the end)

So it's more or less a trick on the eyes, in which case I would have it php redirect to the actual offer site with my aff link attached. To the user they would most likely think it's the regular site when they hover over the link (unless they see the difference in the spelling)

I know this is pretty sleazy, but some of my potential leads have not converted based solely on the fact of them seeing the actual uncloaked affiliate link and knowing what it is.

This isn't a question of should I cloak or not, more of a question of the cloaking domain name being almost identical to the merchant name.

Could i get into any trouble with copyrights or from the networks by doing this? Thanx in advance.
 


bollox. if its not officially stated in the offers TOS to not use trademarks in domain names or urls then you can do it.

or ask your AM :) (always nice to have things in writing)
 
You're basically registering a domain typo in bad faith.
They can tear you a new one at a whole heap of different levels.
IP infringement case in court, ICANN, your registrar.

If you're going on a domain typo, make sure you've got the real domain owner well hidden, and make sure that the affiliate program isn't one of their own, because they'll just ask the network who you are.

I guess could always use a gmail acoount for the contact email to the registrar, and one of those reloadable [gift] visa/mastercards for payment that can be registered online w/ fake info.

and make sure you extort the shit outta them if they want the domain back
 
Depends on the offer. I talked to my AM and he said it was OK, and yes I did get paid for my leads, hassle free. The merchant didn't give a fuck what I did to get teh moniez, so like I said it depends on the offer.
 
How about wickedfire sue wiickedfire.com?

Read the offer TOS (if any) or ask your AM. But most would protect their brands, TMs.
 
its a common sense thing really, if you're promoting eharmony or something well branded (pps etc) they are going to tear you a new one but if you're promoting supercoloncleanse9million or the like they probably wouldn't give a shit. have a look at the product name in google for a start and see what other affiliates are doing, then read tos and finally check with AM. certain offers you can get clearance from your AM even when tos specifically denies it. trademark bidding being an example and you cetainly want that in writing/email.
