Can someone explain to me how a new site got to a million visits a month so fast?

1. Paid for the traffic

2. Figured out how to game the location-specific results G is showing these days.

or, Compete data may be wrong

They are hitting the SEO hard. Looking at their linking structure I don't think they need to buy the traffic.

They have over 900,000 pages indexed in Google

Almost every page of the website can be reached in 3 clicks (or less). This keeps the flow of Page Rank at a strong enough density so that Google keeps the pages in their index and not relegated to a supplemental death.

In Bound Links - they have a lot of them. Most likely purchased. Combined with the easy flow of Page Rank makes this powerful.

Also, they seem to be scraping a good number of jobs - nice programming.

How did you figure that out? I don't see them ranking for anything in the SERPs. Just look for any popular job search term and they don't rank anywhere.

Those things are just the facts (about site design - not traffic sources). They are setting in play a site that will drive a lot of organic traffic.

Right, but look for the many thousands of long tail terms - they rank for lots of Chicago based long tail terms. You add the thousands of long tail terms with the hundreds of locations they focus on and you end up with decent traffic. Running ads gives them traffic for some of the major search terms.

Give them time... if they don't get slapped by Google they will continue to rise in the search engines for more and more keywords. This is due to what I mentioned.

Obviously they are well-funded and can afford to shell out the cash in order to get the traffic.
