The Canadian Anti-Spam Law (CASL) goes into effect today.

Among other things it aims to curb is making the promotional email sign-up process opt-in, rather than opt-out. Having pre-checked "I wish to receive emails" checkboxes now which imply consent is, essentially, illegal. And any Canadian you have already in your lists that were collected this way must re-opt to continue to be included.

Fines range from warnings to up to $10,000,000 per day.

I've read in some places that this, much like the American CAN-SPAM law, is pretty much unenforceable. But there seems to be a good contingent of people taking it seriously.

Lulz, if they're making people collect more than name/email, I think this will end about as well as the European cookie law did.

Things are usually pretty lenient up here in Canada as far as internet laws go, it will be interesting to see how much they actually enforce this.
