Without getting into specifics, here's a real scenario.

My friend operates an ecommerce store selling accessories for cars. He/she was using the car company logos as links in the website. A Cease and desist arrived from a car manufacturer claiming copyright infringement. While my friend quickly removed all the car logos, I said this use of logos amounts to 'fair use' and I have seen such logos in use elswhere on other car acessory websites. Right or wrong? Without the use of logos, the navigation system doesnt look as good as it did before.

ah the wonders of the ecom business. Remove the logos and tell your friend it could be worse. Some manufacturers don't want you using their logos even though you're selling their products. Some don't want you to use any specifications images or product descriptions because that information is available in the user manuals which is copyrighted by them :)

He's got to understand that the legal departments of these large companies will make themselves useful in any way they can, even if it means crashing the rest of the company. You will get nowhere with them. If he wants special permission he has to get it through the sales side of the company and convince them to send that permission over to the legal. It's the only way.
