CERN scientists 'break the speed of light'

Interesting. Shows we have a lot to learn yet. I love how they are like "we aren't claiming anything yet", but really things like quantum physics show we don't know shit.

If they claimed it as a discovery and then found out they'd made a stupid mistake then that would be their careers over :D

It's probably going to turn out to be some sort of systematic error, but you never know. It would be pretty unbelievable if it turns out to be true - a lot of physics would have to be thrown out the window.

If it's not a fault and simply an anomoly of sub atomic particles it wont make a difference to our understanding of Einstein's special theory of relativity it will just widen the gap between how physics works on the very small i.e. quantum mechanics and how physics works on the very large i.e. astro physics. Einstein spent the best part of his life searching for a "Grand unifying theory" to unite the two and this latest discovery from the LHC just goes to show we're no closer. Need someone to come along and simplify things.

One of the fundamental parts of special relativity is that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light, so if it's true then it'll definitely change our understanding of it.

Edit: Good overview of why we should be sceptical (for now) here:

There is no "limit" of the speed of light.

However, one can NOT accelerate to and beyond the speed of light. Physics forbids this.

A particle could - theoretically, and this has been known for decades - start at speed above the speed of light and keep accelerating. You just can not pass the speed of light either going up or down in speed.

This isn't true at all (at least based on current relativity). Nothing with a mass can go faster than light. It's not about acceleration for this specifically.

15,000.

That's a fuck lot of banging you're head against the wall hoping for different outcomes!

Didn't Einstein call that "Insanity?" How fitting.

Wow, if you can repeat it 15k times then I don't care if it's "not real" or not... It's really, really easy to Fake!
